I think VG wants to finish his career with Villarreal, dont know if that is too early for him
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

I think you are right Butland has been played a few times recently when VG was fit. This could be for a great number of reasons but one could be Viera is working out if he can be Number 1 next season. Pope is a complete non starter Burnley want £40 million we will not spend that. Sam Johnstone is a very good bet but he will not come to be number 2. So he is coming to replace VG or has a firm understanding he will be number 1 very soon. There is a question I suppose what will Butland do ? I don't think he will be happy but he may feel he can hold the No 1 jersey

He seems to be a good character/part of the squad but in my view, his goalkeeping skills have been short of what's required. If Johnstone, Pope or anyone else comes in as our number 2, I'd see it as an ugrade. I agree with you on this. I was hoping Butland would be a lot better but his best days are behind him. Upgrade on both of our keepers is needed and I don’t think Johnstone will be coming in as a number 2.

Butland is good but very clamity James like and Vincente is very short for a keeper and an excellent shot stopper but doesnt command the box very well and is hessitant about coming for crosses . Althought i have been impressed with the ammount of clean sheets they have kept ! But i would put that down to fantastic defending .At the same time we had a man mountian in Hennessey and he wasnt very good either . When you see some of the keepers in the league they are the differance between winning and losing a match . ( excuse the spelling and grammer please , me were never grate at it not)

We sold our last U23 keeper to Portsmouth last summer. The current lad (Whitworth) is only 18 but looks promising. Of course, it could be 4 or 5 years before we see how good he's likely to become. Keepers do tend to develop later than outfield players and, of course, have a greater longevity in the game.

For me i fell Butland is better at crosses and not as good shot stopper , Guita doesnt come off his line for any crosses hence so many goals form wide areas that puts pressure on your center backs to get it right , butland did come out more and punched better , it is a hard call , but if johnston comes 1 will have to go Buts is younger so he has 3 to 4 seasons left , hard call

Tough crowd on here. Guaita and Butland are both excellent and have made very few errors. We've been very fortunate IMO. I think Guaita is the better overall and Butland doesn't seem like the sort of character to want stay in the background particularly given his age and the fact both have another year left.

Footballs a dog eat dog world, if the club feel that Johnstone is an up grade on what we have then as much as I like him and he’s done nothing wrong VG might have to settle for the bench.. sadly that’s football life !

I suspect that Johnstone is considered on the same level as VG, with both of them slightly ahead of Butland. If Johnstone is willing, he'll sign and then share time with VG for much of the season, moving into the sole #1 position when VG returns to Valencia in the summer of '23. Butland? He could stay as #3 or allowed to seek greener pastures. He's a valuable #2 in the PL and would be a solid #1 for many Championship teams.
