Reading wba forums, it's hard to see him coming in as our No. 1. In fact, he gets worse references than I would give Butland. Kicking and command of his area seembthe main criticisms. And being a mistake maker. Still, I don't think prem keepers need to command their boxes like championship players, and they seem to say he's a shot stopper.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

I went to the West Brom v Barnsley match and I couldn’t believe how far he was off his line when WBA were attacking. At one point he was standing near the half way line. It was scary to watch. Do that in the Premier League and you’re going to be in a whole lot of bother.

Butland had got steadily worse as the season has gone on and his flaws have reappeared. I think Pat has seen enough now to know that he’s not good enough.

Hopefully it will be a replacement for Guaita, erratic, poor kicker & and a lot older than Butland.

Two somewhat contrasting views on our current keepers in the last two posts. Assuming Johnstone signs it will be interesting to see who goes out the door.

I am happy with both our current keepers. If one has plans to move on or PV is not happy with them so be it, however I don't see this as a priority area.

If there's any truth in Rangers being in for Butland, he could be part exchanged for Joe Aribo

VG is our no 1 choice. He is also a top earner so i suspect if he goes back to Spain it will be as a bosman in 12 months time. If the Butland to Bournemouth or Rangers transfer is true i can see the logic of getting Johnstone in. However, they do seem to be quite similar in terms of ability and flaws etc so looks like a bit of a like for like replacement. I would like to think JB is worth at least £2m to £3m, maybe as much as £5m.

I'd rather look at Etienne Green the Eng U21 keeper whose side just got relegated in France. Wouldn't cost too much, is young and has upside. That being said, not a bad pickup - similar to Butland in that he should be pushing for 1st choice, and if we get a few mil for Butland, might be a good result.
