For me there is a massive distinction between the type of long ball. Its about the intention. Broadly, the poor teams lacking ability, hoof it forward aimlessly. However some of the best attacking teams in the land play long a lot, 2 of the better ones are Liverpool and (on a good day) Spurs. Always looking to go direct quickly when possible.

Good teams use both. Being over reliant on short passing makes us and England far too predictable and slow. Ok many long balls will fail but some can rip open a stubborn defence.
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

Passing out from the back is all well and good, and is a nice philosophy, but a quick counter is also handy for us when Zaha and Olise are playing well.

as intimated above, i like it when smaller teams have a siege on their goal and use an attacking Long-Ball to put the frighteners on the big boys. and consequently, it is frustrating for a small team when every goal-mouth clearance is just out into the stands....depressing and not very imaginative.

Agree, and its really good to see PV being flexible in his approach. I suspect he might not have wanted to be too flexible earlier in the season as you really need to embed the new philosophy.

the 'Long ball game' is a very valid tactic, and one that should be used to counteract the very in-Fashion High Press more than it is. Granted, you aimless lumping gets no one anywhere, and just gives the oppo the ball back most of The time. But if you can play a long ball and retain possession more often than not, then it seems a good idea to me. May even stop the high press being employed quite to vigourously allowing you to play out from the back easier at other times in the game.
