Whilst it can certainly be argued that we are going backwards, (players sold against incoming, with / without replacements) I think in this case its more about Sandcastle progressing, as they will do each transfer window now that they have deep pockets -

It gets tougher each year to stay in this league as teams reinforce, in many ways its a good thing for us there are 3 teams coming up as there is a fair chance that at least one of them (possibly 2) will fill a relegation slot.

Has said these many times, Schlupp might be all right coming on with 15-20 minutes to go and we are chasing a goal. But he should never be in a PL starting lineup. And still, Vieira picks him game after game.
After last season I looked forward to this one with a lot of optimism, but it seems we are going backwards and looking more like a Roy H. team. If we take the Newcastle game and the last 20 minutes against Brentford into consideration.

Schlupp’s main strength is his pace and power but over all he is an average football player. Someone on here said the other day that he is like a wind up toy that you point in a direction and hope for the best. That is spot on for me.

Beggars can't be choosers when you look at our current midfield options. Picking Hughes over Schlupp is not going to make us much better - the other options make us far worse. This was why it was important we strengthened central midfield. Kouyate would have been fine too.

To damn them with faint praise both Schlupp and Ayew are useful squad members who should not be ever present members of the first team if we have genuine aspirations to push for a top 10 place.
This is not intended as a slight on them as they definitely have a role to play with the use of squads during games.
If Mcarthur (or replacement) was fit I would expect him to start in place of Schlupp and if Olise was fully up to speed I'd expect him to start ahead of Ayew.
Our right side of the pitch would be so much more dynamic with the addition of say AWB, Gallagher and Sarr.
This is not a criticism of our current players but reflects the fact that the named players are younger, more athletic and quicker.

Playing ayew and schulpp gives us a better defensive midfield.

It totally depends who we are playing and if we are at home or away.

Played well this weekend. Not sure he is helped that much in midfield with Eze wandering around waiting for someone to give him the ball. Fella needs to help out when we dont have the ball.

Ah, so it's not just me then.

Eze was poor yesterday. Offered little, gave the ball away and caught in possession a couple of times. Never looked like beating his man.

And Wilf looked totally disinterested which was disappointing. Hopefully both bounce back and star next week.

It seems to be widely acknowledged on here that Schlupp is not the answer in central midfield although it's recognised that he is a good player who can have a positive impact from the bench.
At the moment, however, he seems to be the preferred option in the absence of McArthur.
There has been some discussion about trying Ayew in the role after his cameo in midfield and Vieira's encouraging words at the weekend.
I wonder if any thought has been given to giving Richards a go in a defensive midfield role, almost in a Kouyate type role.
He's athletic, good in the air and reputedly decent on the ball.
It may be another case of a square peg in a round hole, but I would welcome some more solidity in midfield which at the moment seems overly dependent on Kouyate.
Luka looks like he's running through treacle these days and Hughes appears to lack dynamism and energy despite being tidy on the ball.
I suppose the question is how we csn best utilise the current squad.

Should read 'overly dependent on Doucoure. '

Yes, i like that idea, or even Ward
