The basis of the original observation was that not only would you have to be very old to remember the facility in question, but that it was sited at the bottom of a large ditch left over from when the ground was a clay pit and the women had to abseil down in order to reach it. It wasn't so much a reflection of social mobility and differing acceptable standards as a highlight of the number of women who attended in those days. Far too many girls rock up these days which is why we've got diagonally-striped shirts. There's also a lack of Brylcreme which in my opinion should be compulsory.
