Get rid of workers rights and this is what you get unfortunately, oh well, you get what you vote for!No workers rights now, zero hour contracts, sack 800 on the ferry with coach loads of agency staff ready to step in, its a CON by the CONS, but hey ho, we have democracy! It's nothing to do with the Conservatives, nor indeed with any current or previous UK government. As someone else has pointed out, the ferry company is based in Dubai. The contracts of employment are with a company registered in Jersey - typical arrangements in the maritime industry according to Simon Calder, the travel correspondent for The Independent.

Not sure on the legalities? But surely the government should be telling P&O that if they proceed with these sackings they'll remove their franchise/licence (or whatever) You're not sure and then you are sure, 5 words later.

Nah, it's easier to blame the Tories.

I feel sorry the the P&O staff unfortunately this is on a par with cruise ships which used to be staffed by UK Merchant Seaman / women my friend being one of them. Today most ships are run mainly by Filipino's and they earn £7 a day (I kid you not) so next time you take a cruise be nice to them. For balance the other side of work DVLA (Nice work if you can get it)

If it was not safe for them to be in an office and they could not work from home what else would you suggest? We sack them all?

For most companies the cost of labour will be among the top 3 highest amounts on the list of expenditures, if your direct competitors are doing the same job / offering the same service for less money ( & the savings can be directly attributable to lower labour costs) to a point where not only are you uncompetitive its driving you out of business then you have a choice to make. Where they'll lose is I won't use P & O after this and I do get the odd ferry. I doubt I'm the only one.

Absolutely right - ASCPFC - Vote with your feet. Although I feel that with so many big news stories in the world these days (almost every day there is a story in the news that grips your attention) that the public at large move quickly on to the next story / situation & quickly forget about how enraged they were about something that happened just a few months ago. We almost now live in a continual shock, horror & repeat news cycle. Originally posted by ASCPFC
