But now WE spend millions on players as well, the early 90’s team was put together on a shoe string, made up of ex-lower league and non-league players. Still for a much better achievement, but I suppose this current story is not yet over, so who knows?

I agree, we do spend millions, but the majority of the so-called "Big Sx" spend much more. Our 5 year net spend averaged £11.2 million. Manchester City's average over the same period is £101.1 million.

For a better idea of how we compare with player purchases, sold and net spend: [Link]

This is true, the top clubs obviously spend a lot more, but my point is we now spend money mostly on players with proven top flight and international experience. The early 90’s team, as I’ve said was made up of lower and non league players we got for a snip. I know it’s a different era and times have changed, but for me, that’s a far better achievement than bottom half of the table finishes with the quality of players we can now sign.
PV has made us much better to watch, but as yet, that is the only achievement, we’re a long way off matching the heroics of Wright, Bright, Gray, Thomas etc, but the improvement is massive this season and long may it continue

I agree that this will be remembered as our golden period, but it's nothing remotely like the Team of the Eighties. For many years, that team defined our broader public image. Now, for the first time, that's no longer the case and nor should it be.

The Team of the Eighties lasted precisely one year at the top level (well, we were relegated after two seasons but once Kenny left the second season was no longer really "that" team. Its reputation was built in Divisions Two and Three (not the top flight), and the whole thing really only lasted four years. In contrast, this side while now at its best yet is still improving and it's the result of ten years (not four) of steady progress, identity-building, and momentum shifting. It's nothing like the Team of the Eighties which was, in contrast, a flash in the pan.

Compare Wilf, who's given us a decade of leadership and brilliance with his equivalent from the 80s, Vince Hilaire, who really had no more than a year of genuine sustained, really top-flight success. There's no comparison between the two. Compare Billy Gilbert, whose reputation exceeded what he ever really achieved in his career, with Dann or Delaney (let alone Guehi or Andersson), both of whom were top-level players who kept us up for half a decade. Compare FFS Murray and his innumerable PL goals with Swindly, who we lionise but never really matured into a top-division, year in-year out goalscorer. There's no comparison.

The Team of the Eighties is largely a myth in the minds of those who weren't there, fostered by the happy memories of those of us who were. This Palace team, and its achievments, are real.

Essentially the main difference with the current period and previous periods is we dont need to sell our best players, when big clubs come sniffing around. Once we survived 2 seasons in the Premier this time around, we stood a good chance to get established. The TV money has meant financial stability, if managed correctly, so we have no need to sell, but can choose if we want to sell or not. So we can keep Zaha and pay him a huge salary, in the past we couldnt and couldnt hold onto Sansom, Hilaire, Wright, Martyn, Thomas, Moses, Salako etc.

Without the likes of Hilaire and Cannon, Palace would have undoubtedly gone into the third tier, which in mind comparable to players who that kept Palace up in the premier in the last decade

You need to dust up on your history. Palace DID go down to the third tier with Cannon in the side and were in the third tier when Hilaire started out with the club. Cannon scored on his debut (I was there) in our final home First Division match (vs. Chelsea), was thus in the side that went down to Division Two and that side was then immediately relegated again to Division Three. (Somehow, I can't see that happening with Marc Guehi.)

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

10 years in PL! Who would have believed that when the fans were marching towards the financial bastion of London? Still, the league highlight for me is the 4-1 victory against top team Ipswich. With Jim Cannon clearing a corner be4 he went on that amazing run and scored our last goal. And we went top of the league for the first time in our history.
I was there on that sunshine, August Saturday...

I don't need a history lesson from you - I'm talking post promotion to the top two divisions 45 years ago.

Were you there in the early 80's ? Dosent sound like it

It is incredible to think how far we have come. When I was a kid there were a few memorable seasons/games with Big Mal and El Tel, but it was invariably shortlived and a constant boom/bust rollercoaster with us all too often reverting to a team that struggled to string 3 passes together. But to think we have just taken 4 points off one of the best teams in europe and have remained in the top flight for 10 years is amazing. The future is looking very bright for CPFC. Well done Parish and Co

I like to think that the next ten years will be seen as our golden period! But Steve Parish and Dougie certainly deserve great credit for sustaining our league status for the past ten years...

You sound confused, Syd was correct. We also hit the top league 54 years ago not 45 years ago.

It's very easy to be pessimistic as a football fan, it's almost as though the whole thing is set up as an outlet for people to have something to moan about asides from real world matters.

Having said that, I am still very shocked that this last 10 years or so we actually managed to sneak in the back door of the PL party and have remained ever since.

I aggressively retain my right to a have a good old whine every now and then, but I for one havecertainly have been a very grateful fan for a long time now. Two cup finals also (including this year ). I used to b***h about Parish often but very rarely do so now, any way you spin it it's been an unlikely success story.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I think vincehair meant we could’ve gone back down to the 3rd tier in the early 80’s when it all started to go tits up. We did come pretty close, but those so called team of the 80’s who DID hang around for a bit longer, as in Cannon, Hilaire, Gilbert and Murphy did probably save us from slipping back there
