The belligerence of the EU will suddenly transform into a panicked fear - and a rush to the negotiating table. Western France is my guess, but i could be wrong. France produced Napoleon and is still often very arrogant toward non EU countries. France also likes to be the boss of the EU. alternatively Putin could target neutral Ireland or Scotland....for maximum PR impact with the Yanks. he is no saner than the blokes who did Hiroshima & Nagasaki. The West has played a very dangerous game in triggering the Rottweiler in the East. He paused at the Ukraine border for a month, to see if we would blink first. We didnt. This fight will escalate before Putin will ever discuss terms. Edited by PalazioVecchio (07 Mar 2022 1.57pm)

Foreign nationals, especially those with experience in the military, can also consider going as far as to join the Armed Forces or Ukraine’s National Guard as active service members. This is legal under Ukrainian law, which enables the military to sign official service contracts with foreign nationals or stateless persons. According to the law, this option is open to physically and mentally fit foreigners with no criminal record, between 18 and 40 years of age, who can apply for positions of enlisted soldiers or non-commissioned soldiers. Under certain exemptions, the age limit can be extended to 60. Similar to Ukrainian recruits, foreigners would have to undergo basic training for up to three months and will be paid equally with their Ukrainian mates. The first contract can be signed for three years. Some foreign nationals, though not many, coming from the U.K., Belarus, Azerbaijan, Sweden, and other countries, have served with various Ukrainian military formations, including in the war zone of Donbas. Foreign veterans of Ukrainian military formations are entitled to apply for Ukrainian citizenship under a simplified procedure. To try and join the Ukrainian military, one also needs to approach a local military recruitment office in Ukraine for further instructions. There are already western nationals who have joined the Ukrainian résistance from last week. You can follow them on social media. If you think a cut and paste from some official website is actual reality when a country is under attack you've been watching too much BBC.

It's a bit of a catch 22, because if we back off due to a leader making nuclear threats, it will without a doubt be the template going forward. The idea that he'd suddenly start playing nice when it comes to neighbouring NATO countries becomes unrealistic (because if he nukes at any time, now or in future, and regardless of pacts between nations, the outcome is exactly the same). As such there is really no choice but to arm Ukraine, impose significant sanctions and use the impact of those on Russia as bargaining tools if Putin eventually realises that he's bitten off more than he can chew with this invasion. Not really, invading a country where many Russians live and invading a nato protected country are a massive difference. He may be a bit mad but unless he has completely lost the plot and willing to press the button (in which case we are all fooked anyway), then he is not going to take on effectively the rest of the civilised world.

Don't try and deflect and obfuscate the point that you were wrong; Beak was correct. Sign of a shallow man.

Certainly a massive difference to us, and 'hopefully' him. As stated though, his threats to use nukes now if they came to fruition, would result in the exact same outcome as if he did so in other scenarios. I'm not saying that he'd outright invade a NATO country. Just that he could find ways to make inroads in and combine that with similar threats. I appreciate it's unknowable though, and clearly hope that you're right! It's a very difficult situation right now as it's hard to 'bargain' with someone engaging in this level of destruction.Sanctions and arming Ukraine is maybe as far as we can go, and also precisely what we should be doing. Russia is paying a larger toll on all fronts that Putin likely saw coming. We are where we are and doing nothing isn't an option.

Follow Anthony Walker, he literally flew over there and is helping now. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from joining a civilian unit, people have taken up arms....indeed, I'm hearing some have been forced to.
