I realise this is just black humour, but I sense a significant increase in pessimism among my own circle at the moment. Which is hardly surprising, but nevertheless concerning. I cannot recall another time in my life that felt like this. The events of the last few years, the banking crisis, Brexit (which I accept others regard as positive), Trump and then the pandemic were all things which can be regarded as the ebb and flow of life. Extreme examples perhaps but not life-threatening. We can swallow hard, dig in and work harder. Climate change is a real worry, but we can, and are, doing things to combat it, so we can remain optimistic. This though feels very different. We are powerless to do anything ourselves. We watch the suffering and want to help, but cannot. Even me, always a half full type, feel stressed as I am worrying about those who always worry. The impact on our collective mental health, after 2 years of Covid restrictions, could easily be very damaging. I am relatively lucky. I will get my head around things, tighten my belt as needed, and will survive, so long as Putin keeps his finger off the button. There are many though who were already struggling and having to make almost impossible choices. Let's hope the spirit shown by our parents, and grandparents, in WW2 rises to the top again in us, and the fortitude and determination of those brave folk in Ukraine inspires us.

Prices are getting loopy, and I'm not much looking forward to our next gas bill either.

I just want to thank our governments for temporarily reducing their tax on fuel to help out the average person during this crisis.

Brexit, Covid, Ukraine. These events were and still are devastating for many. But , there's always some lovely people out there making shed-loads of cash £££££, whatever the crisis.

It's the money that pays for everything we do collectively. Reduce that and we either borrow even, more or make cuts. Whatever route is taken in the end the only people who pay are us.

That includes those who already live in Dublin. Frankly, they don't have to touch their wages - so it is exactly me paying for them. I usually get the bus. I'm not sure what UK MPs get, I suspect it isn't as generous.

listened to radio 4 this morning. They had several callers complaining about the cost of living, and specifically fuel prices. And the real thing that made me laugh a bit, was that she said she was putting red-diesel in her car because it was the only way to get the kids to school. Living in the country can be nice and scenic, but you really have to be prepared for all eventualities. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (08 Mar 2022 4.21pm)

This whole argument is based on the idea that the money is spent fairly and for the betterment of society, which I don't think anyone could argue is true anymore.

He looks like a Saint compared to the parliamentarians in Dublin.
