1, Mateta is easily our best CF he is young and a bit Raw but knows how to play the role
2. Ayew is our second best CF he can hold the ball up well, win free kicks but is not a good finisher
3, Edouard hasn't got a clue how to play CF, he has skill, strength but no movement, i have no idea his position.
4, Benteke, least said the better

Maybe Nketiah(if we get him) or Plange will have more idea next season

I think he's shown that he may be better having a more withdrawn role and running with the ball at defences.

A feature for improvement is when we want to transition from defence to attack.

People are saying we are too slow to build and that there are too many square and backward balls. True but there is a time to move the ball like that but also then there are times when a speedy transition is available and necessary - it's a massive part of the modern game.

I could see him receiving an 'out' ball in these circumstances and using his pace and wonderful quick feet to get us motoring forward in the way that we are missing at present.

he's got the skill and pace to do so and with Wilf in support, my God he could cause problems.

Add to that his undoubted eye for goal and imo we are missing a trick here.

If Nketiah joins on a free and Plange already signed, and Mateta seemingly PVs first choice, Maybe Edouard maybe moved on, i expect Ayew to extend his contract. Olise and Rak-Sakyi on the right and Wilf on the left it dosent leave many games for Edouard.

Assuming we all agree that we have 3 out n out strikers in the 1st team squad, being Benteke, Edouard & Mateta. The stats for them are interesting.

Benteke played 23, scored 4
Edouard played 20, scored 6
Mateta played 9, scored 2

This is all comps this season to date. Source HOL.

Eduoard is by far our best striker. he keeps getting played out of position. Would love to see him play through the middle like he did for Celtic, whereas he seems to keep getting put out wide.
Would kill most teams in behind. Can't see how anyone can think otherwise.

My gut says you are right but Viera obviously doesn't think so. Or at least didn't think so last night.

It was right to play him out wide when we had players out for the AFCON, but we've now got a very good set of wide men.

I think currently Mateta is probably the best option down the middle with the tactics we're playing. His first touch isn't great but he's a handful due to his size and he does seem to hit the target more often than not. Edouard to my mind would flourish in a front two as he doesn't seem to have the physicality to play the target man. He has done well on the left. Ayew is not a striker to my mind. He's a workhorse and keeps the ball well, but offers little threat and can't shoot. Benteke looks like he's already retired when he's come off the bench in recent games.

In terms of shooting accuracy this season:

Ayew 19%
Benteke 33%
Edouard 43%
Mateta 67%

Stats can be misleading, but in this instance I think it's a reasonably fair reflection. Last night showed that despite his flaws Wilf is probably still a better finisher than all of them. He is not a striker though.

Not sure about Edouard who was up against Scottish Premiership defenders and needs two touches to score which is not good against Premier League defenders. to fit in Edouard we would have to play 442 which would bring us new problems. Mateta for me as the best of a not so great bunch of strikers as he can attack and be a target man. Ayew plays the right wing well enough for us but do we drop Olise for him?? Benteke would only work if Wilf and Olise swapped back to their proper feet but would Vieira do that??
I have done what others have in pointing out the obvious problems but not really presenting the answer.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

IMO, it is still too early to assess both Edouard and Mateta.Their PL experience amounts to:
Edouard = just 14 starts and 6 sub appearances.
Mateta = just 5 starts this season and 4 sub appearances and is enjoying his first run of games in the squad (I'd write off last year - apart from that Brighton goal - as he didn't get a look in because he wasn't yet up to scratch).

I want to see how the two of them do over the rest of the season as they become more and mor4e attuned to this toughest of football leagues (especially for strikers).

Edouard has surely made more league appearances this season than all the players you’ve mentioned there - why on earth would he be the one moved on?
He’s also scored and created more than nearly all of them.

He’s averaging a goal every 200 mins in a brand new league, with a lot of minutes off the wing, and has just turned 24.. I think he’s one of the best prospects at the club, and whilst I agree he hasn’t quite cracked leading the line yet, his talent is there to see.

Of the attacking midfielders and outright attackers, Mateta, Edouard, Olise, Eze, Plange, Rak-Sakyi, are all young.

Benteke 31, Ayew 30, Zaha 29, Schlupp 29

Given the direction we are heading and a move towards a more youthful squad, why would we look to move any of the young ones on. We should sell Benteke, Schlupp and Ayew along with Milivojevic, Kelly, Clyne, this summer and free up salaries to bring in 2 midfielders, a centre half and right back.

If Zaha finally goes then a top replacement winger would also be a priority.

Disagree - you can't field a team of youngsters. It's about finding the balance. Experience counts for an awful lot. Plus the players you've listed still have something to offer. There's a big difference between 29-31 and 36+. It's not like we're talking about Dann or Cahill last season. Potentially agree about Clyne if we're not going to use him, which it doesn't seem like we are.
