This is why I don't really like loanees. CG is key and it's only for a season, once he's gone, unless there is a like for like, it's going to be hard... also, with us potentially getting in VDB, who is going to push out for 4 months, would that hinder their growth? and what will it ultimately give us some may... however, it's nice to be seen as an attractive club to play for, with some players.

This was precisely my concern when we signed Gallagher on loan. Well, actually my other concern was that he didn't seem all that good when at West Brom, but you know what I mean.

I think the signing of Gallagher, for all its lack of long term benefits to CPFC, is justified by the relative ease with which we have so far stayed out of relegation trouble. That was far from guaranteed at the start of the season.

The signing of Van De Beek could only be justified if he makes such a difference as to get us into Europe, or the other midfielders are such a state that Vieiria simply can't see how we can stay out of relegation trouble if he has to use them. I'm not sure either seems plausible.

I would like to propose the counter argument for loans.

We are in the process of a complete rebuild of the team not just the age issue but also the style of play. We are not a big club and don't have deep pockets so for the next 2/3 years we will need to fill the gaps.

If we can attract top players on loan that can only be a good thing. If other players see that these loan players blossom under PV it will make us a more attractive club.

Newcastle for instance are a strikers grave yard so I am not surprised that they have have struggled to find a replacement for Alan Shearer who retired in 2006. Why would any top striker want to go there.

So as long as the deal is good for us I am quite happy in the short term for us to stop gap positions and hopefully become the club that young loan players want to come to.

Baby steps.

No, i am not upset about anything, just amazed by your lack of any footballing judgement, i know anyone can have an opinion, but really?

I can only apologise for the inadequacy of my views. I trust it hasn't led you to spill any of the very strong lager that so colourfully influences your own....

Very interesting thread and an important issue to resolve before next season starts.
The fact that Gallagher was brought in shows that none of the incumbents were fitting PV’s requirements so if correct one can only assume that he will need to be replaced unless he sees Hughes in that roll. If it is PV that is pushing for Van de Beek and not just media speculation then he must also think the incumbents are not good enough or are not fit enough at this point in time. I understood that both Eze and Olisse are both midfield players and not wingers so what is wrong with them that Beek is needed. Maybe he just wants them both to get more experience and fitness but it appears to be a costly way to do it.. I think he has decided Jimmy is now only backup due to his age and injuries . All very interesting stuff but critical to resolve before next season starts as the advantage of teams this season not knowing how we play will not be there.COYP

Think you're - as most of us were - underestimating the effect of the injury and lack of preseason on Eze. Perhaps it's also worth considering he was fairly insipid under Roy for the first half of last season. Personally confident given a full preseason and and no injury concerns he'll be a real asset.

Perhaps worth noting how PV has held Olise back too this season - whilst talking him up. To me what he says about both of them is very similar - young players who need a bit of time. The other side to this coin is how PV has relied on old hands such as Ayew and Macca - arguably our two best performers leaving aside Gallagher. Neither is remotely a long term prospect of course but they have provided continuity from the RH era and in team sports that sort of continuity is a precious intangible.

As you mention, I think PV is doing the right thing bringing in Olise and Eze bit by bit. Eze in particular after the bad injury, needs time to adjust. My point is that a player with Eze's natural talent needs to be in the thick of things, a central hub type player, like for example Pirlo. Before the injury in the games under Hodgson there were times that Eze was totally anonymous, put out on the flank in a role that doesn't suit him.

We have a bright young CAM on the books, of course he currently plays for U-23. Wells-Morrison should be very good. I don't think he's ready for next season, but it wouldn't surprise me if he starts making the bench.

It's a standard Lanzo reply these days when he's run out of valid arguments. Also, I reckon that team looked pretty damn good. Would rely on bombing fullbacks which I don't think ours are quite ready for (fingers crossed for Ferguson though).

I think that if PV wants new bought players in the summer then some need to go some let go, Kelly, Maybe Kouyate or McArthur (depending on injury) Luka, Jairo and Benteke may raise 15/20m, and then there's Wilf coming into his last year, he Needs to sign or be sold

McArthur, was our best player this season. Absolutely dynamite with Gallagher this year. Since he’s been injured our performances have dropped off.
He’s been written off the past 5 years , don’t give a fu*k if he’s 26 or 36 , “if they are good enough, they are old enough “ works both ways.
An absolute ‘must’ for a new contract.

Agreed provided he recovers properly from his current injury and isn't going to break down again. Some of us are wondering whether his continuing absence with injury has fuelled the interest in van De Beek.

My interpretation in trying to sign Van de Beek is that PV doesn't want to rely on Eze. As we all know, he's still on his way back from a serious injury. And being brutal, looks a long way short of his best. Signing another loanee buys Ebs some more time.

I also think that PV does have one eye on the possibility of slipping into relegation problems. Hopefully these will recede if we get a decent run of results in the next few weeks.

Looking forward, there's a chance that we could be interested in signing Van de Beek permanently should the loan work out. We must assume that Gallagher won't be with us next season.
