Personally I’d like my referees to be objective! He was off side and active. Mark Clattenberg says both decisions were wrong!

I actually think the second goal was a worse decision becaue IMO and many, many others that is more cut and dried. A player in an offside position made an offensive move (or did he just jump in the air to keep warm?) whereas a penalty decision is usually subjective. Still was a pen though.

I think the Pawson's Arms should consider a rebrand....and don't say enjoy the Friend-ly atmosphere.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

You were right. Even if the penalty had not been given, you could not have it taken for sure that we would have equalised. So this wrong decision didn't cost us a point, it just took away our chance to get one. Regardless of this I've hardly ever seen such a wrong decision concerning pens especially with VAR.

No, but their clearly offside second goal might have.

It can be true to say that both the ref and our bad start cost us.

We looked terrible in the opening half an hour, but it is equally true that Liverpool were excellent. When you are playing against 13 men, it makes it all the harder.

My opinion is that we have adopted the deep block too often against good footballing sides who play a high line when it would be better to press.
Vieira needs to learn quickly because his tactics have been left wanting on a few occasions.

2-1 down with 5 minutes left, plus stoppage time; no-one on Earth can say how different the result would have been. Wasn't it only last week that Leicester were leading Spurs in the 94th minute only to lose?

Whatever might or might not have transpired, the fact is that both decisions were completely wrong and not even 'borderline'. They clearly demonstrate that the whole system is rigged in favour of the big clubs - those clubs who a few months ago didn't even want to stay in this league!

As as others have said to me the second goal standing is what gets me depressed about the state and future of the game.

When everyone at home thinks it's offside and the entire MOTD team says it's offside, why are the only f***ers who don't know the ones on the pitch. Very depressing, but at least the refs have kept the title chase alive for another week, which is the main thing.

I agree with all of the above and actually find the decision making for the second goal far more concerning than that for the penalty. Dermot Gallagher as an ex ref on Sky gave the impression that whether Firmino was 'active' in the lead up to the goal was a subjective opinion. Stephen Warnock completely refuted that view and said that any player in the penalty box is 'active'. Clearly Firmino drags Mitchell into a position where he has to get close to him, thereby leaving Oxlade Chamberlain free to have an unimpeded shot. For Craig Pawson not to understand that issue calls into serious question his capability as a ref - its really very worrying indeed.

Terrible that we have to rely on support from two notorious ex-refs to make our case.
Gallagher, be it remembered, was the ref when Palace lost 2-1 in the cup to top-division Leeds in Feb 2003. A shot by Tommy Black went yards over the line into goal, and then was punched back into play by Michael Duberry. Gallagher gave neither a goal nor a penalty. And in Feb 2005 he sent off Palace defender Gonzalo Sorondo for a 50:50 tackle which Gallagher blew for when he was about 30 yards away. It was clearly not even a foul so Gallagher was just guessing. Palace were cruising to a win at the time and eventually scraped a 2-2 draw. They went down in 18th place at the end of the season, with West Brom one point above them in 17th. So Gallagher's inept reffing twice cost us dear and his opinions now are worthless.
As for Clattenburg, who set the standards for biased reffing which Kevin Friend is now emulating - enough said.

The point of the post, apart from to prove that I can't spell Pawson, is that we can all take results based on bad luck or our bad play. We were poor for 30 mins and they were excellent and when we were excellent we were still a little short of ruthless finishers, often the difference at this level. Frankly 2 0 was more than OK as a score but it was not when all this money has been spent on VAR for f**k all purpose. Any result was possible in that game with its ebs and flows including a breakaway LFC goal at the end to make it....1-3.

We came for a shootout. This is what we got from the match officials: [Link]

I was kind of hoping when I saw the thread title that they had apologised. Had a feelin I shouldn’t have held my breath.

I don’t think I have seen such a united group with regard to these decisions since Clattenberg infamously stopped the game for our free kick when we had a one on one with the keeper.

Can I just state that the fact Palace were very poor in the first thirty minutes or so is completely irrelevant to the discussion about the most inept and disgraceful display of refereeing I have ever seen. Please can we keep discussions about these two aspects of yesterday's game separate?

Oh, and could the mods correct the spelling of Pawson's name in the title of this thread. Don't want him getting away with it...
