Agree…too predictable and teams counter this by committing to the high press.

Also, slightly off the subject…but have you ever noticed that our throw in routine is awful. We seem to have no movement or creativity and end up losing the ball.

We have a routine its the same one we use for free kicks, wait until the opposition are ready and man marketing our players then try and pass the ball to a player who is surrounded by 2 or 3 of theirs. Then scratch your head and wonder why he didn't get that ball.

Half of our higher possession stats this season must be the VG Guehi Andersen triangle which is so ponderous it enables the oppo to get perfectly in shape to defend our attacks. We need to move the ball forward quicker and with more purpose. Sakho was good at that and mostly played the ball to our forwards feet

Also, this gets to me. We get a free kick either on the edge of the half way line or just in the opponents half and we then pass it sideways, then back to a defender. Then when under pressure it goes back to the keeper who passes it to a defender who under pressure lumps it forward and the opponents get the ball back. Okay, it doesn’t happen all the time but it’s so frustrating. What’s wrong with passing it forward or lifting it to our forward players to hopefully start an attack. Yes, we might lose it earlier to our opponents but at least we can press and put them under pressure. Rant (if that’s what it is) over :-)

YES - i bloody hate this. Roy introduced this and PV has taken it to the next level. It is an attacking opportunity so use it. Either launch to the CF or play it down the wing.

frustrates the life out of the crowd when we do that - the only thing I can think of is that we are trying to draw the opposition forward to provide more space to play into / pass through them, which is all well & good but as the previous poster mentioned it invariably ends up back with the defender or goalkeeper with the eventual ball forward being wasted.

Agree with OP. There are 3 ways to play out of defence when the opposition press. Short ball, long ball, carry it forward. The secret to success is picking the correct option each time. The best teams make the correct choices more often. Our issues are compounded by the fact that only Anderson appears capable of a telling long ball.

They all play the short ball ok albeit sideways too often for my liking and both Mitchell and Guehi are ok at stepping up, they all need to be adept at each skill for us to progress.

As someone else has already said, we have done better at it than was expected but it has cost us on several occasions.

I would spend what money we have this January on a top right back and I believe it would make a difference.

If you are able to effectively play out from the back, the intention is to turn your basic defensive position, into an offensive one, by efficient passing through the channels.

Teams like Man City, Arsenal, etc are able to do this.

When we play out from the back we seem to make 6 or 7 lateral passes between Andersen and Guehi and then one of them lumps it forward and we lose the ball, completely negating the original intention.

Id agree that we need to mix it up every so often, but IMO we need to look to pass out whenever we can.

I know it sometimes feels a bit hairy, but its better than the alternative, which is booting it long and immediately losing it.

As a test, watch how often we lose it when we go long. I'd reckon it is 90% of the time. The immediate 'danger' is gone, but the oppo have the ball and we are then defending.

Even if we are going sideways its much better to keep the ball than losing it.

To their credit, Brighton worked their socks off and didn't give us a moments peace. We couldn't seem to find the ball out to escape the press. Ayew was a big miss for us in that regard, he is very good at transitioning play under pressure.

Just remember that we are only half a season into implementing a new style. When it works, we absolutely dominate teams.

We will over time figure out how to combat a very aggressive high press. Partly through training, and partly through buying new players that are comfortable under pressure.

Playing out from the back is the way forward.

Bump. Pack it in. Particularly if it's playing to the opposition's strengths as it did today.

Shocking tactics but we still ultimately had the chances to win.

There is literally no point in lumping it against Liverpool, their CBs and midfield clean up everything
