2. I agree with your comments re our current squad being able to see us through the season and that the main question is the one about Mateta v Nketiah. Re the latter, I'm wondering if he's delaying in the hope he'll feature in the two Carabao cup semis against Liverpool. If Arsenal win, he may want to stay in the hope of featuring in the final and possibly winning a cup medal. If they lose he may then leave in what remains of this window.

Nketiah is not the answer to our striker issues and lack of goals and I hope to high heaven that he isn’t being lined up as Benteke’s replacement (even though I am more than happy for Benteke to be off loaded). Edited by Phil’s Barber (11 Jan 2022 11.40am)

Edited by Phil’s Barber (11 Jan 2022 11.40am) If PV is trying to develop a Man City II team then we are looking for a mobile tricky striker who can play across the front. Benteke certainly doesn't fill that role. I haven't seen enough of Nketiah but presumable PV has so we have to trust his judgement.

I don't agree that Benteke and Mateta don't suit our style of play. We have plenty of nippy, skilful strikers at the club (Zaha, Ayew, Edouard) yet PV continually opts to go with a target man. It seems like the plan under PV is to build up possession in the wide areas and get plenty of crosses into the box for Mateta/Benteke to eat up. PV favours target men so if Mateta and/or Benteke do leave, we should try and replace them with better versions of Benteke and Mateta. Ben Bereton at Blackburn is the kind of striker we should be looking at imo (although we have probably missed the boat with him as Newcastle seem to be sniffing around) or the Swiss international Breel Embolo. I don't think Nketiah is the answer to our problems tbh, although I would happily be proven wrong. I reckon PV would just end up playing Nketiah out wide and lord knows we have more than enough wide players atm.

I fully accept your point Badger, you have to be concerned though that respected people in the club have allegedly done previous due diligence on the likes of Sorloth, Sanogo, Shola Ameobi & Jordan Mutch!

I’ve never taken to Benteke anyway. Whatever the argument about him not getting the service, whether that’s wrong or right, he just hasn’t got that fire in his belly. He doesn’t work hard enough to make things happen, he doesn’t attack the ball in the area and he certainly doesn’t put himself about and let defenders know he’s there. Many a pundit has commented on this over the last two or three years. A gentle giant as martin Tyler called him recently. He wants the ball on a plate all the time and as for best header in Europe as Pardew labelled him?? Do me a favour!! I’d rather keep Mateta So basically I’d get shot of him tomorrow if it was my decision Very sound and sensible advice!

Similar build and yet neither uses their strength to bully defenders and the lack of awareness and anticipation that both have is shocking. Neither seem to be able to hold the ball up, a main requirement for a centre forward. Tekkers is often slow coming back so is offside for phase 2 attacks, and Mateta did the same for our 1st goal on Sat, luckily no VAR. Having said that Mateta has taken his 2 goals recently really well and just by standing in the middle of the goal (as he did for his header on Sat) is a big plus as i'm used to seeing Tekkers and to a lesser extent Zaha standing behind a defender on the edge of the box when crosses are wiped in.

Guessing I am the only one who thinks we look most dangerous when Benteke starts up front ? His hold up play & bringing others in is far better than anyone I’ve seen so far. Eduoard when he is on his own through the middle is mostly anonymous in the games I have seen and bizarrely has worked better on the wing with tekkers through the middle

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |
