I was there for that famous goal as a small 10-year old clinging to the railings near the half-way line of the Arthur. Never forgotten, toilet rolls, rattles, bobble hats, knitted scarves & 6d peanuts in paper bags. John, you'll live forever in my memory, thanks for everything.

Also his pen at Old Trafford which Stepney saved only for Shovel (not usually thought of as a fast mover) to follow up and score anyway. 1-1 draw if I remember correctly
I got vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals. |

Proper gentleman! I was there when he scored against Leeds. Not sure he intended it but they all count!! RIP John. Worked with Alex Stepney many years ago - he was a decent salesman except all people actually wanted to do was chat about football. Still know his daughter.
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. |

My first Palace captain and I was behind the goal when Sprake made the clanger :-) I’m sure they are both having a laugh about it now :-) John Sewell was part of a great Palace team that I started supporting in 1968. Back four of Loughlan, McCormack, Blyth and Sewell. Happy days. RIP Mr Sewell

I was best friends with his son Howard at Primary School. Took me to my first ever Palace game v Chelsea, 7th February 1970, in his Ford Cortina. Dropped me and Howard off at the Director's lounge for crisps and orange squash before going off to get changed for the match. Different times. We lost 4 - 1 by the way, some things never change. I still have the black and white programme. Can recall Ian Hutchinson's whirly arm throw ins. Happy days. True gent was John.
