So you think the ref did a good job? I may well have done a better job when age and health permitted. Better than you gave him credit for, but, not impressive. I like the 2nd part to this post, fair play

I think there are a number of reasons. The speed of the game these days requires a really high level of fitness - some refs are making decisions from too far away from the play. The role of the Linesman /AR . Against Spurs we were awarded a penalty in part thanks to a surprisingly pro active AR. The Shaw handball yesterday was directly in front of a AR who did nothing. I'm unclear to what purpose they serve anymore - stuff happens right in front of them at times and they just look at the ref. Gradually down the years the referees started to lose control over the basics...they have allowed the players to talk back to them, they don't consistently apply the rules ( foul throws, position where they are taken from etc ), and give players an inch and they will take a mile. Nobody wants continual stoppages in play, but I don't think you can cherry pick the rules. VAR - I guess it comes down to opinions, but this has turned into just another example of decisions evening themselves out over a season. You have the same group of incompetents reviewing the action. It does nothing to improve refereeing standards that's for sure.

I am not in favour of criticising referees. They have a difficult job to do, often in a hostile environment and, on the whole, I believe they do it well. I certainly disagree that standards have 'plummeted' this season. Their interpretation of the rules has changed that's all. And generally we have seen faster, more flowing football being played this season. Too many stoppages for trivial fouls break up the game to an irritating degree. Certainly the referee will miss incidents or make a wrong judgement, but, like I said on another thread, it's roundabouts and swings. Some decisions go against you, some for. Shaw's handball was a clear penalty, just like Ben Davies' blocking Gallagher's cross last week. Surprised the ref needed a video check to confirm, but finally got it right. I also think we're seeing less dives, although players like Wilf, Sala and Ronaldo who tend to go to ground easily are being ignored more because the touch to bring them down is often too light to be regarded as a foul. The case with Benteke on Saturday in my view. Anyway, refs are just being different rather than worse is my humble assessment.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

For somewhat of an answer, since The Premier League created its own refs (PGMOL?), that's exactly when the big club bias seemed to become encapsulated in refs. The Premier League refs have been worse, such as the very epitome of them Mr Clattenberg. He is still held up as a shining example of refs on Sky! Ludicrous. Edited by ASCPFC (20 Sep 2021 11.34am)

As a Palace fan it has been frustrating that refs seem to have decided this season that nearly every foul on Zaha can go unpunished. They seem to have decided that he goes down easily for everything and so more and more teams have recognised they can just foul him in order to stop him. We haven't even played Burnley yet so that is a worry as he has become more prone to injuries. In the wider picture there seems to be less interference from VAR, but there were at least two clear penalties which they seemingly ignored; firstly on Friday a Leeds' player was clearly obstructed sending the player (I think it was Daniel James?) crashing to the ground; secondly Zouma clearly went through Ronaldo and was nowhere near the ball and yet VAR didn't intervene, a minute later it gives a penalty to West Ham. Had it not been Ronaldo would they have given it? As always the problem seems to be about consistency. One thing you could say on Saturday was that the referee was consistently poor. For example, it seems to be well-known that if you pull a player back when they are breaking away then it is a yellow card yet Liverpool did that repeatedly. Milner committed six fouls (that were given) and also blasted the ball at Gallagher from point blank range and yet he didn't even get a ticking off. Ward complains once and gets booked. I like the more free-flowing football and the fact that some of the stupid fouls like the ones Kane (and to be fair Ayew) is so good at winning are disappearing, but it seems referees are struggling to identify what is play acting and what are fouls. Nevertheless, if the new style of refereeing is going to continue then we need to stop complaining and follow suit and start doing what Liverpool did on Saturday and target the more creative players with constant subtle fouling.
