I'd usually agree, and in fact I often make a similar point to those who suggest various youth players be selected for the first team, or making optimistic predictions about Fergusons ability. In this instance I confess to picking my best XI based partly on what I hope Hughes, Olise and Edouard will do for us, but I've also considered what they did for their former teams, the hit and miss performances of the players they would replace (Ayew and benteke in particular), the better tactical fit my XI seems to have over the current XI, and finally, the younger average age (and therfore potential for growth and longevity) my XI offers. Don't come on here with your reasonable, well-measured responses. Fair play mate.

This is a great exchange. I'll take a crack at it with the proviso that I think/hope this will be our best starting XI on 1 March: Edouard Zaha Eze Olise Hughes Gallagher Mitchell Andersen Guehi Clyne(?) Guaita Originally posted by sprites

Guaita I thought you'd put Edouard in goal and Eze at sweeper for a minute, then I saw that we'd just changed ends! The key is, as you say, that the team we have for the final stage of the season may be noticeably better than the one that started it, principally due to Eze returning.

Haha! I truly believe that the squad we roll out beginning in 2022 will be appreciably better than the one we have now. As long as we have seven or eight points through our first ten matches, we will be perfectly fine. Originally posted by TheBigToePunt

Unfortunately I doubt Eze and Gallagher will play more than a few games together. 10 if we're lucky.

Best starting 11 is... The team that wins us the most points. Good luck PV, at least there's something to work with (so long as we don't keep getting bitten by the injury curse)

This is precisely my preferred XI and system too. Although I am swayed a bit by sprites point about Hughes v McArthur, I disagree with him when he argues that Eze is wasted as one of the midfield three. The opposite is true in my opinion, he's wasted on the wing, and developed noticeably when playing in midfield at the end of last season. Edited by TheBigToePunt (01 Sep 2021 10.11pm) Yes, i agree McArthur and Hughes i suspect will play 50/50 if don't stay fit, definitely Eze in midfield not wide, the problem with McArthur is his age, which is obviously not his fault

Only time will tell if the new boys can replace the current starters, but this feels like it would be a very exciting team. Against top 6 oppo, it would be intersting to see how PV mixes it up. Potentially Luka or Macca in for Eze (and CG plays further forward) and maybe Olise drops out? Regardless its nice to have some options. Hate the international break even more now!

Totally agree. Whatever happened to having to earn your place. Madness to throw Hughes/Olise/Edouard into a ‘best 11’ without even seeing them. Did his opening caveat not cover that? All fully match fit and hungry to start. But your comment does ram home one remarkable point. For the first time since I have supported this team, we have gone all out to buy a player, but the squad is now so good they may not start, even if fit. The best team will reflect the opponents. Yup, I'm copping out.

If they play to expected (hoped) form, not many teams in this league can beat that line up.

IMHO and with PV appearing to favour a 4-3-3 i would replace Macca for either Olise or Eze (or even Zaha if he continues with the sulking) . Without Macca i can see our midfield being overrun.
