I don't know if I am right but, I also thought very little of the revenue collected from road tax was actually spent on maintaining roads anyway.

I think you are correct regarding what is causing more road damage, and also right that the road tax collected probably doesn"t hit the road!I wouldn"t mention it to the road minister at gov hq though, he might come up with the idea of charging you for the car! I admire cyclists who cycle in a city and obey the road rules, we all know there"s enough useless car drivers out there , but try crossing Borough high street south of London bridge at 5.30pm , and a different type of cyclist appears. Thats the lycra clad, helmet cam, chaps, head down, trying to make it to Putney or Wimbledon village in record time, oblivious to pedestrians trying to cross the road, we need better policing on the dangerous cyclist/car driving folk.

I would have thought that your road fund tax exempt 1ltr Ford fiesta would only damage the road surface, if you drive it like most boy twizzlers do on their bikes.

Yes, you are correct, very little revenue is used to repair/upkeep of the nations roads, so why cant you, as a cyclist, contribute to that waste, or do you see yourself as a special case(NOT you per se, cyclists as a whole)

To protect yourself and pedestrians and vehicles.

I think the benefit of cost and health outweight the danger of being vulnerable on the road.

If your in your car you have protection until their is a heavy downpour and your car gets taken for a ride.

That's the downside from global warming I suppose

The thing with insurance and paying a lot of money for your car is that you feel that you need to get your money's worth - drive down the end of your road to buy a paper ? Esp if it's raining ?

Cyclists mainly are killed on the roads, especially in cities because, they have a total disregared for any & all rules of the road(Highway Code) & virtually every other road user.

The sooner cyclists take road tests, have 3rd party insurance, have bike mot's & pay a proportionate road fund tax, the better. Most people have no idea what a LVG or (full)PCV Drivers have to go through especially to drive in London. There are approx 8 different courses they have to go through & pass, if they want to drive in London, then every year they have to do them all again.

Car drivers & to date, van drivers dont have to do this

Maybe car and van drivers should have to do a cycle test around London to see what it is like to be a vulnerable cyclist in London?

Why not see both sides of the coin

cyclists my way travel in packs at the weekend, sometimes 3-a-breast on windy country roads, blissfully ignorant of the huge tail-back of traffic they are causing.
Cycling may reduce the rider's carbon footprint, but they cause others to pollute far more.,,in my limited experience

I disengage, I turn the page.

I have, several times, it's called the 'Urban Driving Test'. It's what we LGV & PCV drivers HAVE to take every year unlike cyclists who have no awareness of the road/pavements, no idea what the highway code is.

Sooner you, as cyclists do the same, the safer we ALL become

No one has paid road tax since the 30's

Good luck regulating the millions of under 16 wheelie kids who use the roads.

Regulating bicycles is a bit like regulating mp3's.

Let"s forget the kids, just hit the lycra louts, especially those coming over London bridge at 5 pm, they can afford a ticket!
