If you work out how that can happen it means he had to have scored over 60 goals a season. Now, if you count all the games of 3 and in that I've played, I might come close so maybe that's what he's counting too. If you ask anyone what their main three memories are of the genius Pele, they usually say (in no particular order) the header against Gordon Banks (he missed); when he dummied the keeper and went the other side to shoot at an open goal (he missed); and the shot from the half way line against the then Czechoslavakia (guess what, he missed). There will be the odd one that remembers him scoring in the 1958 or setting up Carlos Alberto for the 4th goal v Italy in the 1970 Final which I still suspect was a misplaced shot from him in any case. After he'd retired they gave him the chequered flag to wave at the Brazilian Grand Prix. You've guessed it. He missed the finish because he was talking. And then he advertised erectile dysfunction tablets. Why? Because he couldn't score, that's why. And don't even get me started on all the signed shirts that have been auctioned around the world. The only thing I've seen more of are splinters of wood from the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified in Catholic churches across the globe. Other than that, I've no strong opinion on Pele. great point re the three misses - I read one of his team mates complaining that they'd set up a great move and Pele wud too often f*ck it up by showboating, but he was still obviously a great player. I had the honour of interviewing Ken Jones once (formerly of The Independent and Daily Mirror), it was pre Zidane and Messi/Ronaldo who would make the all time great list, but these were Ken's top 8, he said it was only his opinion, but he also refused to classify himself as an 'expert' so I'm inclined to take this wise man's opinion as fact ... here they are: Pele

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

Pele is without doubt the most overrated footballer (so-called footballer) in the history of the game. Pele played with footballers..sorry i meant he was somehow on the pitch with far far better people than he the creature is.The likes of Didi, Vava, Garrincha, Jarzinho, Rivelino, Tostato, Gerson and Felix were not only much better footballers but also much better human beings and much more humble. Pele and humility does not go together whatsoever. Pele playing with these great footballers and winning trophies is akin to Emile Heskey winning the treble with the likes of Litmanen, Gerrard, Gary Mcallister etc, Frank LeBoeuf winning the world cup with Zidane or Andy Cole despite missing countless chances, winning trophies galore with Man Utd. As far as im concerned Pele being the bloody hero he's been made out to be is like in the movie Ghostbusters where Rick Morannis is inadvertently made out to be the hero when infact much more talented Ghostbusters were the real heros Another thing which is touted alot by his brainwashed supporters and the MSM is the 1000 plus goals he's supposed to have scored. Included in these 1000 goals are practice matches and goals against farmers, carpenters, bricklayers, gravediggers, drunks, work-shy bums skiving off work. Saying Pele is the greatest goalscorer in the history of the game is like saying Ali Daei is the greatest international goalscorer. I've not even got to his character and regarding the Studio 54 stuff with Nomi-Capote-Warhol and other wierd stuff. Honestly..i have absolutely nothing whatsoever against Pele Edited by Robert Heenan (26 Jul 2021 11.03pm)

Maradona may have been an odious piece of work but it cannot be denied he was a brilliant and mesmerizing footballer. Rarely can one man inspire a team the way he did. He was skillful and although short, he was as strong as an ox. Souness said that when he tried a hard challenge on Maradona, he "just bounced off". He's at the top of my list.
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

i think the main problem is that nobody in europe ever saw him play other than in a world cup, he played in an era where players played in their own country. however, you cant argue with a goal a game over 650 apps for club and almost a goal a game at national level, still being brazils all time top goalscorer whilst lifting 3 world cups!

He was a brilliant player, one of the very best. Far too many simply follow other people's viewpoint just to feel 'part' of something. It's become fashionable to criticise Pele's amazing footballing career just for criticism's sake and many doing so never even saw him play, particularly in his home league and country.
