This has a slight tang of desperation about it. I do recall his name being being bandied about a while back but without any real indication that it would become reality. Perhaps he will also pull out the last moment when, just as the deal is about to be done, Parish mumbles under his breath " er, by the way the £80 million pound treasure chest for transfers that I mentioned is to cover the next 3 seasons "

I think a good move i think, instant respect from the players, good contacts within the game, decent managerial record, much better than i thought we would get, its a yes from me (if it happens)

Viera is very much a risk, but my greater concern is how it impacts the club's forward planning. When FdB came in they didn't back him at all. When Roy came in it always felt that due to his age he was just tending things and the club didn't back him with transfers. The arrival of Nuno or Favre would surely have seen more significant investment, but will the same be afforded to Viera? Also, will he get as big a say in what players sign as Favre or Nuno likely would have? On paper Viera looks like he is certainly capable of delivering results, with the final half-season at Nice his only disappointing period. He also seems to have Wenger's ear which can be no bad thing; Ole at Man Utd, I believe, has sought guidance from Ferguson and that seems to be paying dividends. It would also be interesting to see who his assistant would be, as the assistant at Nice took over from Viera. The football side of things is of primary concern, but if he is successful I think it would also send a strong message about giving black coaches opportunities and he could prove to be an aspirational figure for the large number of black children in the local community.

The difference between Viera and FDB is that the new manager has to get a large number of new bodies in whereas FDB inherited a squad of expensive players who couldn't adapt to his system and couldn't easily be replaced. No one knows how he will do, if indeed the rumours are true but it's very premature to write him off already. I would have preferred Favre or Nuno but apparently a deal couldn't be done with either of them so it's pointless pining for what we couldn't have. Viera is as good or better than most of the other rumours (FFS, John Terry was favourite with the bookies at one point).
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

here's a Guardian article after his Nice departure ... doesn't exactly fill one with optimism but I am generally optimistic and open-minded ... "allez les aigles!"

Everyone is a risk, even Nino unless it’s a safe pair of hands like Roy. May turn out to be a great appointment, especially if he has Arsene’s guidance. Plus a respected Black French player who may attract similar talented players from France or Africa. If it does not work out. It gives Parish to perhaps go back to Favre or Fat Sam or even Roy later in the year

Class player and respected by his peers. Will be able to attract players due to his stature. Will unearth gems from the French league like Kante and Mahrez. The football will be scintillating and within 2 years we will be knocking on the door of Champions League qualification. Have faith!! 2 years??? f***ing useless, Vieira out!!

It's a big risk, but realistically who did we think we were going to get? Any manager with recent Premier League knowledge and credibility could see that there is a stack of issues at Palace, and so it was always going to be someone like Viera who will give it a lash but has nothing to lose. The most positive thing is that Palace are giving a black manager a chance...
