dad used to work the carnival on odd occasions (ambulance man)
it was the short straw, nobody wanted to do it.
Sometimes it would be behind a wall of coppers, getting pelted with bottles all day.
what morons attacks ambulance staff?
(probably worked with your old man , martin2412, on a few carnivals)

Yes Bob, the old man always prayed that it would be pi55ing down during carnival weekend as it kept a lot of them at home

That's just a sambadrome... you don't get it do you!?

The carnaval in Brazil is a massive street party in EVERY town and village in February. It hasn't moved inside to one sambadrome. It usually goes on for 3 weeks... same here in Argentina and Uruguay.

Only richer people can pay to get into the sambadromes.... for the multitude it is one huge street party night and day!

Mine's a light and bitter.

Along with roads being closed off and pubs all being stowed out it got less fun.

A reasoned summing up from a reasonable person. Always a treat around these parts.

As ex Old Bill who worked many carnivals it was always a double edge sword for us Coppers... An absolute pain in the arse to Police and 2 proper long days but at at the same time you were looking at at least 8 hours at time and a third overtime for the Sunday and at least 16 hours double time for the Bank Holiday Monday so all told it was worth about £800 in overtime so happy days really!!

Yeah, and you and your mate always got photographed by The Sun alongside a couple of dolly birds who were wearing your helmets. That before the serious drug dealing, rape, robbery and violence kicked in later in the day. (My old man was in the Met 1951 - 1981).

I was making the point that you can have a carnival in a safe environment such as a stadium.

That's it mate. There was always the token copper on the news dancing away. I made sure that was never me!
The crime that goes on there is mental but half of it is never reported or highlighted.. Every year it gets passed off as a 'largely peaceful carnival' blah blah blah

Sundays
Lots of pictures of coppers dancing with large Caribbean women.

Monday
Lots of pictures of bloodied coppers dancing as they dodge bottles and bricks.

Whether we like it or not, it is part of Londons modern culture.

You know when it is.
You know where it is.
You know what it is likely to be like.

Therefore we can make our own minds up about whether to attend it or not.

Personally, I think it's a shame that it is being cancelled again. A lot of people put a lot of effort into it and whilst I have zero desire to ever go, for some it is the highlight of their year.
