That's just a sambadrome... you don't get it do you!? The carnaval in Brazil is a massive street party in EVERY town and village in February. It hasn't moved inside to one sambadrome. It usually goes on for 3 weeks... same here in Argentina and Uruguay. Only richer people can pay to get into the sambadromes.... for the multitude it is one huge street party night and day!

As ex Old Bill who worked many carnivals it was always a double edge sword for us Coppers... An absolute pain in the arse to Police and 2 proper long days but at at the same time you were looking at at least 8 hours at time and a third overtime for the Sunday and at least 16 hours double time for the Bank Holiday Monday so all told it was worth about £800 in overtime so happy days really!!

Yeah, and you and your mate always got photographed by The Sun alongside a couple of dolly birds who were wearing your helmets. That before the serious drug dealing, rape, robbery and violence kicked in later in the day. (My old man was in the Met 1951 - 1981).

I was making the point that you can have a carnival in a safe environment such as a stadium.

Whether we like it or not, it is part of Londons modern culture. You know when it is. Therefore we can make our own minds up about whether to attend it or not. Personally, I think it's a shame that it is being cancelled again. A lot of people put a lot of effort into it and whilst I have zero desire to ever go, for some it is the highlight of their year.
