His kicking against Brighton was shocking. Shanked 2 or 3 goal kicks which is ridiculous for a professional. Also messed up more than one pass back booting out. He was really frustrated with himself during the game. I'm really surprised no-one has mentioned it, maybe just riding the wave of positivity for his saves. He does not look comfortable with his feet at all. Vicente isnt either but unsure if Jack will be the answer for Pat.

Guiata turned 35 this week, an excellent shot stopper but doesn't command his area & too much punching, isn't the long term answer.

There’s only one Nigel Martyn…. No sorry, you mean John Jackson. Truth is we've had some decent keepers over the years. I think Butland will be better for a few more games, but he did save a (fairly poor) penalty. He came across well in his post match interview I thought.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Have to admit I was on the beer in front of the telly so it wasn’t so apparent. There have been some expensive horror stories around goalkeepers recruited for their distribution rather than the bread and butter - I’m thinking Karius, Kepa, Bravo and to a lesser extent Leno. Alisson has toned it right down since ha first signed. IMO it would be a mistake to go down this route.

But for me Nigel Martyn away at Everton, game finished 0-0 and he made 12 saves that day which were incredible. He got a standing ovation from the crowd, never seen anything like it.

And don't forget the incomparable Billy Callender - the keeper who always saved penalties. I don't think shinpads had been invented in his era, so he stuffed old copies of the Croydon Advertiser down his socks. Attachment: 001_billycallender- cupit.jpg (717.70Kb)

I see Palace are quoted in the Sky Bet odds for Henderson, along with other Premier League teams looking for a replacement keeper.

Guaita has better reactions, while Butland is better playing the ball in the air and commanding the box. Neither excels with his feet. Viera may actually want to play each of them depending on the strengths of the opposition and the style he wants to play each match. Over the course of 15 games, I think VG would earn us a few (very few) more points, but against teams who love to cross or who win many corners, Butland would make sense. A big unknown variable (to the fans) is who directs the defense better – or is that a job assigned to Anderson? PV and staff probably have a good handle on that aspect of the game.
