I was on the Holmesdale that night but to be honest don't remember too much about it apart from being rather cramped.

A mate of mine at the time got one of Dave Swindlehursts sock after we all ran on the pitch, wonder if he has still got it
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

I arrived very early, parked in Clifton Road, had a swift one in The Clifton Arms and took my place in the AW soaking up the atmosphere. As I recall the game was a pretty tense affair until Walsh scored. After that I remember feeling confident we'd win. Of course, at the final whistle, Selhurst erupted in a wild frenzy of pushing and shoving to get on the pitch. I was crushed against a barrier and thought my number was up. Terrified me. I had bruised ribs and was in agony. To cap it all I left the ground to find my car had been towed away by the Police and a cone was there in it's place. Had to pay to get my car back. Despite the bruises and the fine, it was a memorable Selhurst occasion.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Travel-wise, my dad and I treated it just like a normal evening game in that we set off on our drive from Erith at the usual time. It never crossed our minds to get to Selhurst any earlier. Anyhow - perhaps weirdly so in hindsight - we had no difficulty whatsoever getting into the Holmesdale end, but I recall to this day our shock at seeing how many people were already in the ground. The historical accounts of "10,000 locked outside" seem surreal but at the same time "scary" in that they remind me how easy it would have been to miss surely the greatest night in CPFC history.

I was there, high up in the Arthur Wait at the Holmesdale end, with my late brother and 2 German work colleagues. One of whom was the UK MD of the German company I worked for, and the other visiting. I don't remember how I got the tickets, and only how exciting it was. They were both well up for the chanting. My MD became a fan and regularly came to the games with me, along with his son. He especially appreciated Dave Swindlehurst and thought him a much better player than most fans did at the time. I have lost touch with him , as he went back to Germany, but like to imagine he still looks out for us.

Got there very early with my Dad, and they'd already sold out of programmes. Standing on the Holmesdale half an hour before kick-off, louspeakers urging us to move forward as so many more were outside trying to get in (this was, of course, 10 years before Hillsborough). Squeezed in tight. Fabulous night. Team of the Eighties!

I got there an hour early so got a luvly pozzy on the Whitehorse wall, there was a moment when the crowd split on the pitch because it is slightly elevated so tripped several people simultaneously - I remember falling backwards, seeing loads just in front fall forward, then start to fall backwards as they regained their balance. For a fleeting moment the possibility of being trampled to death did occur to the 14 year old ex hib, but the crowd managed to settle, thankfully. Got a program years later as they ran out very quick. It was tight until Walsh scored but Burnley hardly threatened. I always regret the club couldn't manage to get that team to kick on, the other regret is the demise of the Whitehorse Lane End - I don't know if it will be forever small and Sainsburied but it would be great if they could somehow build a higher tier in there - or widen it into the corners - it's not the eyesore that the main stand is but it's still a bit of a damp squib.

Yes, I would settle for another tier on sainsburys for now, as the main stand isn"t happening yet, or maybe do both at same time !

The aroma of tobacco and monkey nuts, we always stood in that end with our dad, I also miss the magnificent huge floodlights in each corner, quite a sight.
