The one in n the Blues Brothers. Can't quite remember the stats but supposed to the biggest/most expensive/most cars damaged or something in a film at that time. Just remember it as huge and chaotic. Probably won't see much like it again as these days a lot is done by CGI.

Italian Job for me. Not so much for stunts, but for pure style and humour as well as a kick ass tune (self preservation society)

Some of you have made a good point about how filming methods have changed in the 52 years since Bullitt. Computer imagery now makes things look more realistic even though fake. In olden days they filmed real cars in real time in real locations. But, hey ho, that's progress. If you're feeling really nerdy, here's a link to a description of the filming locations. Interesting that the petrol station where the baddies crash in a ball of flame is now an office block.

For those of you that watch the car chase in Bullit, take a note of the brilliant change in the sound. When the Mustang is following the Charger, there's a slow build up of the background music...as soon as that Charger turns left across the traffic, the chase is on and all you have is the sound of the engines. It's a brilliant use of sound to enhance the images.
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

French connection hands down. Not sure if true but done without NYC consent and many participants regular road users. Never get away with it now. Yes, that's what I heard too. I'm sure it came out in a TV documentary I saw years ago. I think I prefer the Bullitt one but that sequence in The French Connection is iconic. It's a long time since I've seen it but I remember Ronin had a good car chase scene as well.

In olden days they filmed real cars in real time in real locations. But, hey ho, that's progress. I get this. Proper stunt drivers. With real chances of death if they got it wrong. I used to be a petrol head when I was younger. Detroit iron was my bag, so Bullitt was up my street. Bill Hickman was the stunt driver. Other notable classic car chases can be found from that era before cgi and safety regulations. Vanishing Point (1971) is an amazing journey of absolutely fantastic stunt driving ability. The film is rubbish though unless you like driving movies. Carey Loftin was the man who did most of the stunt work, designing and performing it. He was the go to man for stunt driving at the time. Another is Gone in 60 Seconds (1974). Henry Blight Halicki Wrote it and directed it. He was also the stunt designer and driver. He was only good at the stunt bits, so another appalling film but it has a scene of maybe 35 mins of pure stunt driving where countless cars bite the dust. He tried to make a sequel some time later, but died during the shoot when a stunt went wrong. Try and have a watch, purely for the stunt driving. Special mentions also for Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), and The French Connection (1971).
