they could simplify football by calling it kickball so all passes, shots, back heels and traps would just be called kicks instead, apart form headers which would be called head kicks. I think it could be good for the US market. the best teams would have the biggest kickers.

There could also be corner kicks, direct free kicks, indirect free kicks, goal kicks and penalty kicks.

Whilst I don’t disagree, teams being amalgamated could possibly work as in Australia where State of Origin is huge.

Stage of Origin is a different kettle of fish with two rival states going head to head once a year over a three match series, it also has history and tradition as a major event. It’s more like a north vs south match which I agree would be decent.

The Hundred is like mixing the best players from Palace, Chelsea and Fulham to play in a 9-a-side, 70 minute match with 6 subs and no half time, setting up as a joint franchise named The Southwestern Thunder Claps. Total dross.

The concept of The Hundred makes my blood boil and is a threat to Test cricket. I hope (and think it will) be massively boycotted.

Part of the appeal of the state of origin game is watching Queensland and NSW teammates taking each other apart.

Just of the subject of the Hundred it is a competition concocted by marketing men so jealous of the IPL’s success they had to come up with something “revolutionary”. I am a cricket fan and this kind of bollox is not something I will give two hoots about. Change for changes sake. There are so many t20 (and even a t10) francises around the world the last thing we need is another one.

if young people are not interested in cricket, in favour of other sports and past-times, then the governing bodies are right to re-evaluate the format and make it appealing to younger folk, otherwise it will die off with the ageing fans.

However I think they could have come up with something better than the Hundred or a format that more easily transitions into other existing shorter and longer formats.

They could have easily got an English based franchise or two in the IPL. Especially when you consider the Asian population in the UK. That would generate domestic and world wide interest. I support Worcestershire and would have no interest in the hundred.

Sorry to hear that The Hundred makes your blood boil mate.

Quite the first world problem you have there.

Always felt sorry for the short backward square leg but that's a bit of a silly point.

I started this thread earlier in the year because of the terminology changes the cricket folk were introducing with the Hundred series.

It now looks like the wokists have succeeded in getting agreement to move away from referring to batsmen. They will in future be known as batters. Batty more like.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I've always thought the name "cricket" was discriminatory towards grasshoppers and locusts. Amazed they've been able to get away with it for so long.

The game should rightly be called "Insect" so as not to offend.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

The Hundred sounds awful. I'm 36 and my favourite is, was and always will be test cricket.

Same here, a little older perhaps.

On football not sure we could change the terms. An obvious one is linesmen. I still have to stop and think before calling them assistant refs.

I noticed in Australia they always say "kicked a goal" which really makes my blood boil.
