A simple answer to this would be, if you called me a c***, you may be right, may be wrong (probably right), but that's subject to your opinion. If you called me a black c***, you've attached race to it and it can be interpretted as racism.

If the abuse Fred received was directed at his race and not him being a dogs*** footballer, then there is valid claim to racism.

Yes, that’s true but still doesn’t explain why the racial element automatically makes it a far more serious situation.
Three times in a year my wife was called a white bitch in east London, once in front of a policeman in a shop . He shrugged and said there was nothing he could do about it. I’m all for racial equality but it doesn’t seem to be reciprocal.

The whole point of antagonism is to antagonise. If you know that a racial slur is effective, then any dopey teenager online is going to use it to get a response.

It's not rocket science.

By using the term racism constantly, all people have done is cheapened and diluted the meaning.

The holocaust. That was racism in the broad sense, since Jews are not a race, but they were an identifiable group.
Even slavery is not in itself racism, but the rules pertaining to who could be a slave and the subsequent segregation of Black people were most definitely racism.

Calling people names? Give me a break.

As a relatively new participant on here I just had a browse at some old posts out of curiosity. You've certainly had some fun in the past!

But there was a thread started in 2002 titled 'Is it racist to....' very similar to this, sorry about that, but interesting comments made on that thread too.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Absolutely right Hrolf - spot on.
All of the crap that surrounds racism and other issue only goes to take away from the serious issues which actually do exist and that need dealing with.
People yelling "racist" for no good reason turns it into the cry wolf scenario.
A real shame but these unintelligent idiots can't stope themselves.
Real racism needs dealing with 100%!

But did it involve a colour. I suspect one may have maybe but that doesn't give Fred the right to associate genuine posts suggesting he performed badly as racist. Its the old all Muslims are terrorist analogy.
Or are black people above criticism in all there formats just because they are black?

I doubt it. Why us it OK for some to use it though - and not others?
Another example - drill music extolling stabbings, why is that fine? Imagine a white person made that music - would that be fine?
A lot of these complaints are because of 'one rule for one, another rule for another'. That's not equality, that's a power game.
Now, I would agree that there has been a lot of historic racism. But that does not excuse what's happening now. Even if racism was all pervasive, as Sky Sports News wants us to believe - are there not actually far more pressing problems for us all? Or even much more pressing problems for black people that are just getting side-lined due to the constant need to find racism, if you want to categorise by colour?
My own take is housing, health and crime should take much more priority than racism. Perhaps I'm wrong.

No. I have no desire to insult people needlessly.

That doesn't mean that other people don't take great delight in doing so, or that the victims overreact thus allowing the culprit to achieve their goal.

My point was really was there are certain words that you just can't dumb down to just a word and personally I don't and wouldn't use it under any circumstances even though I'm seen as someone who is "allowed to" because of my parentage.

I don't agree. All words are just words. The power of a word is what we assign to it. It is a personal choice.
