In young’s pubs always drank mixed.
Their brewery tours were epic.

Another Aussie remembering his roots (non-sexual), The Bull in Streatham, cannot remember the taste but was a class beer.
However, when I married and left Upper Norwood, I landed in paradise and dicovered Adnams in Suffolk.
Can still get Broadside in OZ at Dirty Dans. Hic!

The Bull kept a good pint

Did you ever drink Batemans? Now there’s a lovely drink.

I used to enjoys Youngs Special back in the late 80’s. Then they made it weaker and it was never quite the same.
I find London Pride ok, but Fullers do some excellent stronger beers. ESB, 1845, London Porter and Bengal Lancer are really good and if you like something really strong then I think their Imperial Stout is the best beer I’ve ever had. Closely followed by the Brewers Reserve no 5 and a honourable mention for the Imperial Porter and Golden Pride. They also bring out some old brews called Past Masters and most of them are excellent as well.

Mate was a huge copper. Moved to Canada. Used to come back specifically to drink ESB

Once found him sitting in an empty skip. He genuinely thought he was on a flight back to Canada.

The beer of my youth. Just pure nectar. Especially before they reduced the ABV back in the 80s or 90s.

The Dog and Bull, Railway Telegraph, Fountain Head, Plough, Dukes Head, Greyhound. All hallowed ground.

Now it's just meh. So frustrating.

Anyone else an ex addict?

Now that Sambrooks have moved into the Ram Brewery, which has the longest uninterrupted period of continuous brewing in the UK, I have discussed with Duncan he could do a retro brew. John Hatch has joined Sambrooks, previously the Youngs' brewer since 1986.

So, if anyone feels as strongly as me about a pint of Special get on to Duncan and twist his arm please.

the cricketers on shirley rd , used to drink in there from around '77.
youngs special was beer of choice as I was a bitter drinker then, wouldnt dream of drinking lager then
(although its mainly lager now-peroni, hieneken, moretti, asahi)
Late 70s was big for CAMRA and we were spoilt for choice throughout early 80s with variety and guest Ales appearing.
the welsh bitter, Fellinfoel , was very nice as I remember.
Shame about Youngs going that way.

bull, streatham, was a youngs pub with the very rough Greyhound just up the road on the corner.
Anybody remember the Norbury , down the road a mile or so the other way?

I'd prefer a pint of ordinary. The Pied Bull, The Gloucester or the HandinHand/Crooked Billet for me.

In fact I did the young '135' I think it was back in the day. That is visited every young tied house listed on that little leaflet and had it signed or stamped for a polypin and a tie. The fountain in Plumpton Sussex was the furthest out and was combined with a few losing bets on race day.

I live in Plumpton and the Fountain has been my local for many years. Not open at the moment as you can imagine. I would think that Len Harrington was the landlord when you visited. He was a real character and I still have a bottle of "Sir Len's Ale" that Youngs produced for his 25th anniversary at the Fountain back in 1993. It's a free house now and does a very nice pint of Harveys who are a well thought of local brewer. Plumpton racecourse is right next to the station and still well worth a visit.

Used to love Winter Warmer, in the Railway bell, gipsy hill, think Young's went downhill slightly after being taken over by Wells.

Used to be behind the jump in the Dog and Bull back in the 70's.
I remember when after the budget the price went up to 52p a pint, no longer could you get 2 pints of "Spesh" for a £.

Lovely stuff back in the day, did most of the Youngs pub tour. ... 148 Youngs pubs, get a signature from each of the landlords and they gave you a tie, a Firkin and a trip round the brewery.

Broke my heart last time I was in Wandsworth and the lovely smell of the brewery was no longer wafting in the air...
