I completely agree with your observations Willo. If I recall correctly, Goldberg didn't have enough funds to complete the deal including the ground; hence Noades holding onto it made sense for both parties at the time. Fortunately, it was all resolved with the very savvy acquisition by the 2010 consortium. £10m was the price I seem to recall - what a big multiple it would be today!

I completely agree with your observations Willo.

If I recall correctly, Goldberg didn't have enough funds to complete the deal including the ground; hence Noades holding onto it made sense for both parties at the time. Fortunately, it was all resolved with the very savvy acquisition by the 2010 consortium. £10m was the price I seem to recall - what a big multiple it would be today!

Like many thousands of others I queued for hours at ‘stupid o/clock’ to get my cup final ticket in 1990. Ron Noades came out of the club and walked down the queue chatting to every one that he could. He went up in my estimation that day. He had his faults, let’s face it, who doesn’t? But he did a hell of a lot for our club. We should be thankful.

He went up in my estimation that day.
He had his faults, let’s face it, who doesn’t?
But he did a hell of a lot for our club.
We should be thankful.

Every club he owned was thrown to the dogs when he left them. Struck gold with Coppell and Wright. He had several opportunities in the 90's to really push the club on, but chose to line his pockets every time. Its took 12 years and two administrations to recover from the Goldberg deal. Business men operation at that kind of level always appear to be friendly, caring, and approachable. Just look how Levy is portrayed on the Spurs documentary. Really they are ruthless, narcissistic, self interested c***s. Sometimes having them works to your advantage, but they should never be trusted.

Goldberg was told he was being shafted, and sadly ignored the advice. The rest is history. I never met Noades and I do not dispute any stories about him talking to fans. As I said, when he didn't like what we were saying in the ground he threw us out. I did however meet Simon Jordan in around 2005 in a hotel bar through a mutual friend. For those with short memories, this was at the time that Noades was suing Palace for money that he said he was owed under the lease of the ground. He wanted to squeeze the pips out. Jordan's opinion of Noades was, unsurprising, low. A torrent of abuse. Noades then sold the freehold for £12m in 2007 to investors who wanted to try and develop houses on it. Noades couldn't have cared less if they succeeded or not. We only managed to buy in 2010 because the owning company went bust and the administrators off loaded it to us for £10m. I don't dispute the (mixed) success on the pitch as during this period before I had kids I went to almost every game, but as some saviour of Palace with "Palace til I die" etched in his bones - no. At the end of the day he couldn't give a s*** what happened to the club. Following Palace since 25 Feb 1978

Noades presided over one lucky year of success for the club. Achieved on a show string. I do think it can be repeated - probably not by us. However, our most successful spell is now isn't it? I don't recall us ever feeling safe around now - or even thinking ahead to next season. We were always a season away from disaster in the past. I'm presuming we aren't now. Ron has his supporters and his detractors. I think we didn't mind him when we had little ambition, but when Coppell wasn't backed and when he got his claws into the infrastructure of the club, we weren't happy.
