The first electric cars were around in the 1800s so we have not come far but we will.

Lots being done on renewable energy but still is a way off, though nuclear is the best option in the short term though the waste not very environmently friendly.

The mining for the materials needed for the batteries is very carbon intense and the disposal is difficult.

The range is a problem I can drive 200 miles a day visiting multiple remote sites constantly stopping and starting. What happens when you are stuck in a traffic jam on a motorway for a few hours in the winter, hundreds of stranded electric cars.

Saying all that once the oil companies get behind the new tech (which I suspect they already are) things will move fast. Like it or not its the way forward for now.

Hopefully hydrogen will come on leaps and bounds

We know a Professor of sustainable energy at Imperial. His lab is like something out of a 1950s boys comic. Well Heath Robinson.

He reckons we are getting there with Hydrogen. You can surround your house with some kind of plant (lichen maybe?) that produces hydrogen apparently.

I dont beleive the grid atm will take the load required for charging all these cars.
Most is 1930-40 and was designed to have a socket in each room, an immersion point and cooker point.
Now we have AC, jacuzzis, house extensions etc etc.
About 2 trillion to upgrade nationally.
I reckon BJ has done this for two reasons.
To shut up the tree huggers like Greta ugly kid and ER, and secondly if labour win in 2028 its their problem.
Quite cute really.

If you're like me and only buy your car second hand anyway (and about 5 years old), then you're fine until circa 2035 at least, and that second hand petrol car will last you until 2040 anyway

By then the infrastructure should be sufficient to make the switch

Amen to that. The sooner we are energy independent the sooner we can tell certain countries to take a hike.

The government have got the green energy narrative wrong.

We were the richest nation in the world when we could produce our own fuel, and we have an abundance of wind and tidal energy that won't run out.

Germany and Japan have an advantage on car manufacturing at the moment. The first country to go fully electric is likely to get an advantage in manufacturing electric cars.

Both countries are heavily dependent on imported energy.

When Kennedy said they would put a man on the moon within 10 years this was a goal there was no plan at that stage, it was more of a can do spirit.

I think the same applies to electric cars and the rest of the green plan that Boris put out. Manufacturers will put all sorts of obstacles in its way because it means they have to invest in developing new technology however now that 2030 is a hard date they will knuckle down and have to address some of the issues raised on here.

It's never going to be Nirvana but Boris is right we need a vision especially with the huge job losses, people will soon complain that the government has no plan for creating new types of jobs, well this is it.

Maybe it won't all happen by 2030 but even if that date slips by a couple of years the main things is that it happens.

As for the new jobs well one example is that people will want a charging point in their home garage or forecourt or work place let along public car parks. this will need electricians so a new industry much like the Sky dish fitters.

Better to have a vision than just wring your hands and say it can't be done.

My concern is that red tape will just slow it all down. Get on with it and start creating these new jobs.

Elsewhere, Johnson’s plan leaves much to be desired – especially when it comes to funding. Of the £12bn announced, just £4bn is new government money – meaning two-thirds of it is simply recycled from previous promises, or being assumed to be delivered by the private sector. To put this into context, France has already pledged £27bn for environmental stimulus measures and Germany has committed £36bn.

When you look more closely at these government packages they are just froth, thee is only 4 billions of new money here, a pittance considering the scale of the task.

There's only one thing that is certain, and that personal mobility is going to be severely curtailed in very few generations.

War, pestilence, plague, poverty are all going to become regular subjects for the news networks.

Lockdown? You ain't seen nothin' yet.
