Looking out from my Croydon 'green' HQ I see expensive cars with only one occupier, where they are going I regularly walk and probably arrive quicker.

I enjoyed my motoring but realised when it had to end.

After a while you get used to it and wonder why you ever bothered.

Every vehicle is a money-pit, it owns you - not the other way round.

It is much more polluting than people realise, diesel fumes do kill people.

I would like Edwardian pony and trap, but then I am stylish.

You speak enough pony and trap

Good luck with a pony in Croydon. It needs an acre of grass. Per pony. Also, see what becky wrote. All fine not having a car, but you have other transport.

I would be more concerned it doesnt end up halal.

Heard this being pushed this morning on the basis that rather than charging fuel duty, the cost will be transfered to a per mile charge.

But surely, unless I am missing some crucial factor here, fuel duty is already a form of charging per milage?

We will need a new tax to replace fuel duty I am more concerned with how this would work rather than the principle. As I previously posted if they install a black box this smacks of big brother and will be open to fraud.

The people who use the roads the most should pay most which is how fuel duty works. I expect motorists will be up in arms whatever the solution is, one way to assuage that would be to include cyclists in any new tax regime. It's about time they started paying their way.

Most modern cars are trackable as it is. And once people fall in line with being charged per-mile driven it will then be used to enforce speeding and so on.

And they can also then control where you can drive. If they want to close down a city, simply make all the vehicles not start. Ditto with imposing curfews and so on.

The more miles you drive, the more fuel duty you pay. As simple as that. This is about so much more than just revenue raising. This is about control. No other way of looking at it.

This is the slippery slope without doubt. I’m actually thankful that by the time they get to the stage where they know where everyone is and control their every movement I’ll be long gone.

If they want to improve the world just tell China to stop churning out CO2. Yeh, good luck with that.

Exactly. Pointless and costs more to setup and run such a tax per mile scheme. I don’t agree with any more taxes on fuel and travel but if it’s short non essential journeys they want to reduce then raising the fvck out of fuel duty would be the way to go rather than tax per mile. But I suppose the public don’t think that way before jumping in the car like they would knowing how much tax they’ll pay for driving to the gym or to pick up whatever when they’re sitting around anyway.
