Look at the CV of a Cole, Lampard, Terry or Ferdinand and explain how they underachieved - I’m genuinely curious how that can be argued.
I'd already answered your domestic level query in a follow up post. I'm not claiming they weren't good players. My post was about hype and it used the 'golden generation' label as an example. I used it in relation to what was stated about England's players performing on the international stage saying they didn't win anything or even look like it. Please let's not go round in circles. I'm fine with you thinking the opposite. Edited by Stirlingsays (23 Sep 2020 1.18pm)

A post on a separate topic got me thinking, who do you think are the most overrated players in the prem? For me it’s always the young English players. In past times; Wilshere and Barkley. Nowadays, Declan Rice would be a clear number one for me. Add Stones, Pickford, Alli and Lingard. Dean Henderson is coming up on the sidelines too. Not done enough yet to justify the hype. Any foreign ones worth mentioning? I think it was probably my post stating that Pickford and Stones were imo the most over rated players in the Prem that prompted you to create this thread. I'd like to therefore nominate the world's numero uno over rated player as...... Neymar. In my opinion he's a pile of dogshyte. Edited by martin2412 (23 Sep 2020 1.25pm)

My take on the Golden Generation is that they were all very effective performers in domestic football, and all played a very important role for their clubs, and in that context, you might argue they weren't overrated. However, on the international stage the Golden Generation England team looked deficient against the top world footballing nations of that time, and certainly didn't live up to the expectations we were led to believe we were entitled to. I recall watching the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and thinking that we looked quite pedestrian , and some of our passing and ball retention was very poor. Also, the creativity that was required to breakdown opposition defences, and not just those of the top sides, wasn't there either - 6 goals in 5 games in 2006 and 3 goals in 4 games in 2010. And let's not forget we didn't even qualify for Euro 2008. So, I think you can argue that they were over-rated as the England teams they populated never looked remotely like they were good enough to go all the way.

The current lot looked worse than that in the last couple of matches. I'm not sure many of them are rated highly enough to be over rated. The stand out, best player, arguably star, is Kane. Most of the rest average. I would say Rashford is good on his day.

Aaron Ramsdale. He was pretty poor in goal for Bournemouth in my opinion and was amazed how much Sheffield United paid for him. David De Gea is starting to look pretty over rated as well.

Pogba 100%. He has/had all the hype and commercials. He's big, but slow on the ball. Turns it over way too much. Has little vision, and can't control the game. Yeah, occasionally he'll score a strong goal, but which big player wouldn't. Worse than most central midfield players in the PL. He's no yaya toure.
