Not just these comments are ugly! Most are here. This is a nest of nastiness which often leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. There are some seriously unhealthy views held by several regular posters in these threads, although one stands head and shoulders above the others. Hopefully there will be just enough decent Republican Senators to thwart the hypocrisy of McConnell. 2 have already indicated they won't support a confirmation before the January swearing in of the next POTUS. It only needs 2 more and some will be looking over their shoulders to see whether their own re-election prospects are enhanced, or harmed, in going one way or the other. That's the sad reality of US politics today. If that doesn't happen and Biden wins then I forsee demands for an amendment to the constitution imposing term limits both on Senators and Justices. Or maybe the compulsory retirement of say the 2 longest serving Justices in the 6 months following a Presidential election. Requiring Senators to retire after a set number of years would carry the great benefit of them being able to vote according to their conscience and not in able to secure another term. And you dont vote in a selfish way?

What a rotten system, politically appointed judges, from 'the land of the free'. Ours may appear ridiculously biased and out of touch at times, but they are still independent.

Judges are just puffed up lawyers of course and few people like lawyers....It reminds me of that old lawyer joke: 'How are an apple and a lawyer alike? They both look good hanging from a tree.'

As it hasn't been said yet, due to the palpable excitement at her death, I'll first offer a simple Rest in Peace. A tough old bird. Edited by BlueJay (19 Sep 2020 1.57pm) Completely agree - RIP Justice RBG. There had been a lot of talk of her basically being in a coma for the past year or so, with progressively worsening health. I found (find) the whole obsesssion along these lines pretty macabre, and I'm surprised people haven't heard of her, TBH. That said, I can't say I agree much with a lot of her political stances. I don't have to though, to recognise the force she's been in the US legal system. As for the partisan sniping, with "bUt ObAMA diN'T gET to SeLECT a JUDGGE in tHe SaMe cIRCUMstanceSS!!!": LOL. He is within his consitutional rights to nominate, and the Senate are within their constitutional rights to reject that nomination, irrespective of what was said. As if the Democrats wouldn't be doing exactly the same if they held the Senate and the Presidency. As if they don't already indulge in gutter partisanship, as we've seen over the past 4 years of "Orange man bad".

You are 100% right. The US system really is unfit for purpose and at the heart of the divisiveness now dragging them down. It needs to be radically overhauled but their determination to cling to an outdated constitution no matter what ridiculousness it delivers is going to go on causing problems. Linking ourselves to this failing giant rather than the EU is just plain stupid. The cynical idea that our Judges are simply "puffed up lawyers", as described by the usual suspect here, makes me wonder just how much actual experience they have ever had of one. I have had on several occasions. Always as a plaintiff, I hasten to add. I have never failed to be impressed by their wisdom and fairness. I once took a government ministry to Court and won an appeal against a decision. Never a hint of political bias. Not for nothing are the political views of our Judges regarded as entirely personal and irrelevant to their loyalty which is solely to the law. As we witnessed when the Supreme Court found against the government last year.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

RBG has been ill for may years and Democrats feared this day would come. Obama tried to persuade her to step down whilst he was president and she could have cherry picked her successor. She refused as she is entitled to so the mess is all on to her. Trump is entitled to pick a new judge and the senate is entitled to accept or reject it. If this upsets the Democrats then they should blame their beloved "Notorious RBG" who to some appeared to enjoy the limelight too much.
