I agree Spider and frankly, 14 mil for a young striker is the going rate, there have been far worse for more expensive fees. Perhaps we could consider he could replace Benteke. Therefore, we could free up money in the saving of wages. If any team wants Benteke, which seems unlikely. Heard Benteke's injured.

Broken bone in foot.
My son has just completed a scouting course ( football not boys!!) and has had access to many European games, he feels this is a good target, am happy to go with his assessment tbh

He has certainly struggled after coming back from injury, but a lot of players do. He does seems to have a lot of potential. Strong, powerful, knows how to find space, good header of the ball. When fit coming off the bench in last 20 mins he could be quite a handful

One small club like Palace can't pay 14-25 million for someone just to come off the bench. That man must be a starter and be better than what we have. He does ok for a 23 year old, but is already at an age where he reached his potential (I see them still young until they turn 22-23) and on a downside after the injury, but with an already inflated price because of that good 1 season.

I made a list of great center forwards to buy and there's a reason why those are on it and Mateta is not, although there are a couple of 22-24 year olds: [Link]

They offer more stability in the long term, more seasons with top quality so it wasn't a fluke and overall better odds at proving a better signing for that money.

I'm not saying Mateta couldn't be one, but it's a great risk, while the ones I talked about are a 99% certainty.

There will always be a long list of targets that fans think might be better...but to be frank about it if the club aren’t looking at them then what’s the point in us looking at them?

Compare Mateta against other strikers we are linked with by all means, but it’s a waste of time comparing him to every striker.

My questions would be...

1. Is Mateta better than Benteke/Ayew?
2. If not then does he have the potential to be as good as Benteke/Ayew?
3. Does he fit the wage structure better than Benteke?
4. Could he have resale value?

If Palace can bring a forward in that adds another 10 goals a season and the midfield chip in a bit more then we could have a very good/safe season.

Good questions, but if at some of them the answer is "yes, but there are others who would be better?"

A better sporting director would maximize the buy of one center forward, not settle for someone who is better than Benteke and could have a good resale value.

Mateta could have a 50 million re-sale value and go for 50 million after scoring 30 goals for Palace. Meanwhile if someone gets Moussa Barrow from Atalanta (cause he costs about 25 million too) and he plays both as center forward and winger in the next 3 years for let's say West Ham and scores 25 goals and contributes with assists to other 30 (which Mateta doesn't seem to do) and he leaves for 80-100 million because he'll only be 23-24 by that time, then that team will have had a better league position than us and more money in a direct competition, even though the Palace management would have seemed good given Mateta's profit.

With all due respect, you’re not the sporting director of Crystal Palace or any other club for that matter so until you’ve done the job at a high level then you’re opinion is one based on what you think and not what you know. You’re still just a fan on the outside and a lot of the comments you make on things like players asking prices is nothing more than conjecture. Unless you have been in touch with every chairmen/sporting director to ask for quotes on their players then again it’s opinion dressed up as facts.

If the club think they can find a striker that will score more goals than Benteke (can’t fail) and maybe even score more than Ayew which I think needs to be the true target for us... and f that player can fit into the budget and has room to develop further...then I think I’d be happy with that.

I wouldn’t be interested in a list of 100 other strikers that may or may not be for sale/interested in playing for Palace/affordable/good enough/right character.

@hudsoneagle No problem at all, you're correct in what you say.

But finding someone better than Benteke is not that hard, finding even better is hard.

I probably will never be chairman of Palace, but if I were I might do a better job. I made a thread showing how wrong or right I would have been in the last years. It came up with a 3000+ million profit. [Link]

I know some people will say I play Fantasy Football, but I just think it will be a probable scenario if someone able was in charge.

Every player has a value. Id suggest many football enthusiasts could go out and pick 50-100 players performing well, who are under the age of 26 and it’s highly likely they would make large profits given time. It’s simply the way football values work...it’s not a testament to you being the Sherlock Holmes of football.

Forgive me Mattteo but I just don’t buy your rhetoric...however I do admire your knowledge of the minor European leagues.

I'm gonna hang myself out on a whim here and bet my mortgage that you will never be chairman of Palace... Call me old fashioned or call me streetwise... I'm gonna be arrogant and say my first thought is right??....

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

100% this post.
It is virtually impossible to state how much a club is asking for/ willing to pay for a player unless you are closely connected to either club. There are also so many aspects involved, image rights, add ins, salary, agents fees, sell on %.
Mattteo, with all your knowledge of European leagues, to say you could do a better job than SP is somewhat a fantasy but I suppose we have all thought we could manage a team better than the manager at some time in our lives

I don’t know but I have a sneaky suspicion that there’s a little more to being chairman of a premier league club than providing huge lists of players and saying “look, I’ve made a massive profit.”

Here’s a 2018 quote from one of our current scouts:

Jaroslaw Jach: Zaglebie Lubin – Crystal Palace, 2018

“This is my one that nobody knows about. Jach is 23, a late developer whom we acquired from the Polish league for a minimal fee. I believe he will go on to play in the Premier League for many years to come, while he was recently called up to the Polish national team. In terms of value for money, I think he’ll be a very good signing.”

So maybe signing Matteo up wouldn’t be such a bad idea

Vive le Roy!
