Apart from a brief period in the eighties and nineties it was always hard getting on the property ladder. What is happening today is more like going back to the fifties and sixties. I'm not saying it's a good thing but hopefully young people will learn how to save for what they want rather than instant gratification. I'm more concerned about the fall out from the virus on jobs and the devastation that new technology is going to do on jobs and careers. When I was growing up my mum rammed it into my head get a job in a bank it's a good career and you will get a cheap mortgage. All of which turned out to be true. However if I was an 18yo today my concern is what if I pick the wrong career. They could end up wasting a lot of time and effort on job qualifications only to find that 5-10 years from now it's all automated. The one growth area I have noticed is in Home Improvements. I would tell any youngster if you don't like working in an office become a "handyman". Back in the sixties most blokes worked with their hands and so could also do a bit of painting and decorating maybe even put up shelves and basic plumbing. Today those skills sets are in short supply I would rather pay a little man than do the job badly myself. This is one area where young people should explore I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I have no sympathy for people like that. I was more thinking about a person who does what they think is a worthwhile qualification in something like accountancy only to find that sector has shrunk due to automation. It is difficult to guess which sectors will be hit hard some people may be in for a rude awakening. In a recent experiment AI was used to past judgement on simple civil law suits it turned out to be more accurate than the trained lawyers who had actually done the work and made mistakes due to human error. So if lawyers jobs are at risk what else is up for grabs. How about robot MPs cheaper and harder working:

Have to agree the kids have it a lot easier than we did, even if they do buy a place it is mostly ready to live in, no stripping walls and replacing old rotten skirting, they think borrowing as much as they can is the way forward, and also the importance placed in owning, is overblown, if you get a good deal renting thats just as good, in Germany they all rent and spend half the year in Gran Canaria on the beach! Rent limits is a bug bear but no party will force this change. Mainly because the state cant own every rental property. All I'm saying is look after you and yours as everyone else is. Have empathy with a n other and help when you can but people by nature are selfish.

I wouldn’t agree kids have it easier than in the past. Each generation has its unique challenges like War, rationing, social unrest, recessions, supporting an increasingly elderly population, social media, normalisation of p***.graphy, automation of jobs etc. There’s no easy pass. Take my mum’s generation where many have gold plated pensions and it all looks pretty rosy now. They all grew up with rationing and foreign holidays were in the main unheard of. Equally eating out just wasn’t done. Living conditions were s***e and if your parents reached 70 they’d done well. Equally the kids now, tough times. Incredible pressure an academic achievement and neglect of other social progression which would arguable serve them better. Clearly mental health has deteriorated rapidly over the last decade. Cyber bullying, constant social media judgment, confusion over gender roles, house prices out of reach and only another season of prosaic Hodg-ball to look forward too. Don’t get me wrong, they have a better quality of life than ever by some measures. And on the whole women are hotter and more sexually liberated than ever. So it’s not all bad.

Avoidance is the really only answer. Sooner or later the 'system' will catch up with you. I had a long viral illness I think 1985 and was very low when I had a recorded delivery notice that I was to appear at some office in the centre of Lewisham to assess my fitness for work. My distrusting antennae came into operation and I did not go. I never heard another thing, but those who did attend had not realised that by attending they would be deemed fit to work. The 'medical assessment' was whether you could get to the interview !! A typical example of the 'system' and I gave my doctor a complete bollocking in front of a crowded surgery. I immediately felt better and went on to recover without them and their 'system'.
