Congratulations to all wealthy students on their wonderful exam results today! In these extraordinary times, the hard work and sacrifice of your parents in paying for private tutors, text books, and nannies to watch you do your homework has been more valuable than ever. Our nation will benefit from having mediocre minds bolstered by thousands of inherited pounds being the doctors, politicians and leaders of tomorrow. Congratulations! As for the poor, hard luck. So you couldn't access the internet to do your homework? Well, haven't you ever heard of a library? Oh, they were all closed...but still, you should be able to learn everything by yourself by now anyway, that's why I told my Archibald I would be cutting his private tutor numbers from 8 to 7 after his exams. You got the grade from your mock exams? Well, now you understand why they're called 'mocks', or you you, if you weren't so stupid and poor. Enjoy your s***ty life serving me in Waitrose, or more probably Tescos. Yours truly, Boris, who totally gets what you've been through, after my totally normal upbringing and schooling. It always makes me smile that people who are most against racism, LGBTQ discrimination, are pro union etc have a real hatred for anyone who's got a few quid. I'm not talking even about Billionaires, I'm talking about someone who through hard work & not splurging their hard earned on multiple holidays abroad every year & chucking a bit in a savings account.....

It's wonderful that we have a system in this country which chronically underfunds the education of the majority (who as we all agree are thick as sh*t anyway), but gives tax-free world class education to a privileged few. Look at Boris for example, a man whose elite education allows him to take the tough, intellectual decisions us plebs could never dream of making, like...shaking hands with infected people!
If punk ever happened I'd be preaching the law, instead of listenin to Lydon lecture BBC4 |

You sound like a bitter person, try taking a chill pill. Let’s not try and make political point scoring out of a national crisis Political points on the politics forum! Oh yes how dare I, so sorry for upsetting you. Let's just deal with facts then. The government set up a totally amazing fancy system to guess what grades all the kids in the country would get. The totally amazing, completely neutral and impartial algorithm gave better grades to kids from private schools than they were predicted, and worse results to kids from poorer backgrounds. Coincidentally, the government who made this totally amazing and COMPLETELY impartial system all happened to be...well, multi millionaires who mostly went to private schools. But this last fact shouldnt be taken in to account however, because we need to let those smart people use their massive brains to keep this country on track...look at these recent economics figures...down 20.4%! That's good right? I wouldn't know because I never got past my 3 times tables at school...and quite right to!

He said the results have been massively unfair, students that were nailed on to do well given ability and history being downgraded. Odd how England refused to learn from Scotland

Any individual cases that obviously need changing can be and anyone can do retakes. I can’t imagine why you’d want to ‘go to’ university via video in your first year anyway. Check your undercarriage.

These students did not sit an exam through no fault of their own therefore any grade they get is purely subjective. I was predicted to get A's but by the time I took my exams personal stuff had got in the way and I only got C's which was my fault. University will not be a great experience during the virus so they have time to appeal or better still actually sit the exams.

Not directly related to the results, but what I took to be a rather worrying indication of the modern student's take on life.....I was talking to a Professor from Manchester University a year or so ago and he said that, because of the status of the University, most students who got in were high achievers at their respective schools. However, in their new groups, not all could be as high achievers as the next as some had to be, by definition, lower than others in the group. The consequence was that some had very serious reactions to their "failure" as they'd never experienced failure before. So the University had to introduce cookery classes because it was "OK" to be a bad cook and it taught acceptance of not being best. I do wonder whether this is what happens if the one that comes last in a swimming gala gets as much or more applause than the winner, or you are second or third runner up rather than having lost. One of the most dangerous things in my mind is this "you can be anything you want to be" mantra that has been doing the rounds for some time now. No you can't. There are endless things that you can never be. Accept it. I would have loved to have been a professional footballer but it wasn't meant to be. I'll never be on the front cover of Men's Health magazine either. It doesn't mean that I begrudge those who can do those things.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

We love to compare so look how accurate teachers were with grades against the actual results in the past. Over estimating from the pupils own teachers will be shown to be common I reckon for obvious reasons.
