A statue for the sake of having a statue.
No one knew this guy until somone went hunting for him. It's actually funny how people are so transparent

An awful lot of people know about him, more than you'd believe, so please, do not be so 'flippant' over someone YOU know nothing about.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Pele deserves a statue. One should be erected at Wembley.

Or Eusebio.
Do not watch UK TV but now see that there is a drama
with an all Asian cast.
Surely there must be a part for a "token white man" ?

A talented individual who didn't get his chance due to such a ridiculously arbitrary reason is probably a decent representation and something to learn from too, so no complains about it from me.

Surely statues - like Nelson safely out of harm's way on his column- need to be the result of genuine affection and respect. They can be instructive as well. I am thinking of Queen Victoria. In the UK her statues tend to encourage memories featuring an older lady sitting down and reflecting the latter years of her reign. However, I have (when visiting Canada) seen the image presented to that important part of the British Empire, of a standing young and attractive lady. We have to hope that there is not a feminist revolt - this statue is the forerunner of the exploitation of females that was typified by page three of the Sun and has no place in today's world.

As has been said on this thread there is a bandwagon of those not thinking about the suitability of their actions.

How do you know this? Can you give me a ball park figure and why so many people know about him?

I have no problem with the statue but his family and the media are trying to turn him into something he is not. He was a 1 in 3 striker in the lower league that's why he never got his chance at a higher level. I'm sure he did suffer racism but that wasn't the reason he didn't have a better career.

I wrote a piece about that on this site if I can find it I will repost it.

He "lost" his place in the England team to an Aston Villa legend Billy Walker a 1 in 2 striker for England and considered one of the best players this country has produced.

I found my comments.

You don't have to believe me but just compare the records of Billy Walker Aston Villa and Jack Leslie of Plymouth Argyle.

""I was going to post on the BBC about this topic as an example yet again of bad journalism. The gist of the story is that he was selected and then dropped because he was black.

1. No evidence is presented in the article to back up this claim so if it exists then it is bad journalism as it should have been included.

2. The article fails to explain how England players were selected and how that process was problematic. Prior to Walter Winterbottom players were called up by a selection committee made up of amateurs. The complaint from within football was that these people had their favourites and ignored the advice of the professionals. Many great players of that era did not get enough caps for this reason and so eventually the selection process was changed.

3. Plymouth Argyle played in the 3rd division and then the 2nd division whilst he was at the club. The article claims (again no evidence) that someone from the FA came and saw him play decided because he was black not to select him. His goal scoring feet in the lower leagues 137 goals in 401 appearances or 1 in 3 hardly a stellar strike rate especially in the lower league. It is just as possible that the scout decided he wasn't that good ?

4. Throw away comment from the BBC he was replaced by Billy Walker of Aston Villa (Division 1). The Beeb forgot to add about Walker

"He is considered by many to be the greatest footballer to ever play for Aston Villa Football Club and one of the greatest players to have played for England"

So being bumped for a player 2 divisions above you with a far better scoring record is hardly a surprise. Walker had a 1 in 2 record for England.

5. Having said all that I don't doubt that Leslie would have suffered racial abuse from opposition fans and it is quite possible that he was dropped for the reasons the article states. However It is not enough to guess that was the reason not if you are the BBC.""

If the people of Plymouth want to put up a statue to him why not he clearly was a big fish in a small pond but that doesn't mean he shouldn't have one.

I'm Chinglish, would anyone be willing to chip in if I started a crowdfunding for a statue of Fan Zhiyi that can be erected outside Yau's?

We could save some money and use the statue of David for the mould of his golden love wand.

I'm also willing to personally go to build-a-bear and make a recording of myself shouting 'Harrow! Rooking good Reagles!' that could be then used in the statue with some sort of motion detection.

Happy to add some more phrases too:

'Raff our rowd, it's Charlton!'
'Awwww Mr. Dunk, you so lubbish and rook like you have limp noodle.'
'Millwall fans, you no chicken oriental, you soft like soya bean curd!'
'Manchester! lace you back to Rondon!'
