It's not just the cost to the taxpayer many of the Lords are politicians who were kicked out by the voters so just when you thought you had seen the back of them they pop up again. Then there are people like the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Chief Rabbi and leaders from others faiths. If they want to mix politics and religion they should stand for Parliament no other democracy allows this nonsense. We should have an elected upper chamber with fixed numbers probably around 300. They should be based on regions to ensure that all parts of the UK are represented fairly and voted for using PR. It's time to end the gravy train. Seconded !!

My issue with the Lords is there are so many of them. There seems to be no limit on numbers. So many noses in the trough. At least the Commons has a limited number of seats.

Interesting how there wasn't this clamour to abolish the place while there was a chance they could disrupt or derail the Brexit process. Labour and the LibDems are equally (or in fact more) guilty in cramming their cronies in there, so it's a bit rich to wail about it when the Tories do it. But of course "ToRIES BAd, FASCisTs!!"! Yeah, it needs to be culled and modernised - I've said this repeatedly during the Brexit debate, for example. But it has become an arms-race: one party cramming peers in so they have no issues passing legislation, and then the next party does the same. Edited by davenotamonkey (02 Aug 2020 8.55pm)

Shami was made a peer by Corbyn within 3 months of the whitewash report that said there was no anti-Semitism in the Labour party. She was immediately made Shadow Attorney General she only joined Labour that year. Her creditability has taken a dent considering the Human Rights Commission is about to come to the opposite conclusion. 2. There are no limits and what is even crazier is that the Lib Dems have the most peers even though they only poll between 10-15% of the vote they are massively over represented. 2.

Guido Fawkes and Oliver Cromwell were bang-on-the-money. A system that 'rewards' someone for being married to a travesty of an un-elected Prime Minister. ? Does anyone know where I can get some ammonium nitrate delivered to Central London ?
I disengage, I turn the page. |
