First car was a Ford Escort Estate (Mk2) in the 1980's. it had a 1.3 engine. I wrecked it by going over a hump-backed bridge at mighty speed, losing control on landing, and ending up smashing backwards through fencing and into a farmers field. 2 litres of filler and some spray cans later and a door from the local breakers yard, I sold it for what i paid (£180) with a dodgy MOT.

The old MOT. What a blinder they were and insurance wasnt the robbery it is now. Buying and selling cars was so much easier. Cars were metal though so that may have helped you. I had a mk 1 escort. Wish I had kept it. Flogged it for 30 quid back in the day.

1994, I bought a mark 3 escort off my sister for £100. Again a 1.3 engine, but it paid for itself through accidents.
Over the next 3 years a few people banged into my car and the insurance 'settled for a cash payment'.

when you send a letter to the insurers saying, "my car is valued at £100. The damage by your client is estimated to be £600. If you send me a cheque for £300, that will be full and final settlement". the payment was through the letterbox the next day

So the monies were spent on petrol and new tyres and another dodgy MOT

That car just kept giving

That tempted fate yesterday morning some c-unit reversed out of his drive and T-boned my lovely Vauxhall Corsa. One of the best cars I've had. Roomy, yet a 'small car', 1.2 engine which was very economical.
And the c-unit was driving a black beemer.

my car is a write-off. I know where he lives (the beemer driver), and it's not too far away. I've given him the option of not going through insurance, but the bill will be £1500, so i hope he has deep pockets

My first car of interest was a 1965 4.2 E-type Roadster. £250, that was back in 1973. It was beautiful but sadly rusting. 2 years later I couldn't afford to replace the rusting bonnet. So sold it on. Today, with decent restoration the car would be worth Benteke's weekly wage.

The best car I've had was a boring old 2002 Ford Mondeo 2.0. Bullet proof and handled better than most sportscars (especially the E-type).

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.
