That’s right, I remember now, the Germans beat Spain, so we had to better their score!! I expect we’ll look back at the 2018 World Cup with a lot of nostalgia as well as we got to the semi finals, but even that wasn’t that great. We actually managed to lose 3 out of the 7 games and it was the same old story these days, as soon as we play someone decent we fall short, as in Belgium and Croatia Edited by monkey (26 May 2020 8.39am) I agree with your summary. In fact I posted similarly elsewhere, plus the point that 2 of our 3 'proper' wins were against minnows. The win on penalties was in a tie that we tried our best to chuck away. I expect there will be nostalgia, but not from me. The best I'll offer is that we progressed further than most people predicted, but in absolute terms we were pretty average.

Well I gave up expecting anything from England years ago. Look on the bright side - it keeps our Scottish friends blissfully happy.

I was too young to remember 1970, but 1982 we had a real chance. I recall brooking and Keegan coming on for the last 20 mins and we had a couple of great chances to win by the required 2 goals. 1986 was hugely frustrating as we didn’t start playing against Argentina until we were 2 down. I still can’t believe that Lineker didn’t put that Barnes cross away.

Went through this with a friend last night. 1986 - Lost to the winners by a hand ball and wondergoal Seems like when ever the FA have appointed someone who's not a complete clown as a manager we've done ok. I make that out of 17 tournaments, we've been beaten by the winners 4 times (3 times on penalties), finalist 3 times (twice on penalties), and been knocked out with 10 men on penalties twice. That's 9 out of 17 times we've been unfortunate not to get futher. I can't really remember a time when we've had a bit of luck. Maybe it was all saved up for the Cricket World Cup final?

That last line is a cracker - ssaving all the luck up for the Cricket World cup final... although those 4 runs for Stokes were pretty jammy no doubt about that.
