Been watching this excellent fly-on-the-wall type Netflix documentary. Probably wouldn't have bothered in normal times but it does fill the football vacuum and Palace connections pop up all over the place - Jonny Williams, Brabban, and I've just reached the Cookie/Symons reign. Searched to find out how they managed to finance Stadium of Light constructions but still no wiser although it is used as a concert venue. Roker Park was such a s***hole that they had no choice but to build someting to comply with the new rules at the time.

really good series, just goes to show how the club used to be run & how they want to be sustainable moving forward. makes me appreciate parish’s actions even more...its the right way to go. i have no sympathy for the staff whose backs were put out due to them coasting in their role tbf. i assume it was cattermole they were alluding to when they said they had a player earning £50k a week in league one for the next 3 years.

The Maja transfer really highlighted the b****** nature of agents. Losing him pretty much cost them promotion, and the behind the scenes footage shows the consequences with jobs etc in doing so. Really good series. The Will Grigg transfer saga encapsulates the dilemma when it comes to spending cash in this game. The agent did his client a great job getting him on £57,000 a week though.

Although I am enjoying the series, as already posted, there are some things that are extremely irritating. First, there is the almost unanimous belief from all involved that the club has a God-given right to remain in the top level. We all know quite a few other clubs like that, don’t we? Second, the hatred and hysteria of supporters of the manager, players, owner, tea-lady, etc, every time the club lose a game and sail downwards. So many other factors are involved in a club’s performance - luck, weather, injuries, etc. Of course we live in a “blame” culture now but having personally experienced a double relegation with our club in the ’70s, I can’t remember anything ike the bulging eyed vitriol of all filmed at every lost game. Last, I was at screaming point after the umpteenth mention of a “huge, huge club”. They won the FA Cup in ’73 but most of the other very minor honours were in far distant times. The only “huge” thing now is the Stadium of Light” which they have no hope of ever filling. Nevertheless, it does make excellent television and is well worth watching.

The capacity of the 'Stadium of Light' is 49,000. Sunderland's average last season, when the lost out in the play-offs to Charlton, was around 32,000 but they did get a near capacity crowd of around 46,000 at home to Brad City on Boxing Day.I think this was the highest crowd in the EFL that season. This season most of their attendances have been circa 30,000 which of course is excellent for a club in that division. Edited by Willo (04 Apr 2020 10.43am)

The original planning of the Stadium of Light allowed for an expansion to 66,000 if needed. That was mentioned in one of the episodes. Apologies if that was confusing. That was the figure which I had in mind. OK? Edited by Jamesey (04 Apr 2020 12.47pm)

Sunderland have never been the same since they sold Gabbiadini to us! Their current manager,Phil Parkinson, is their 10th manager (Excluding caretakers) since 2011. I’ve always avoided watching this because it always bugged me how much money they through at their team and they were still s*** and f***ed it up big time. But sounds like everyone seems to rate it, so I’ll have to give it a watch

A "pig in a poke" indeed but in these "woke" times that expression would be shouted down as "animalist"!
