Sinn Fein will likely not be the largest party.

A three way split in the vote necessitates forming a coalition to make the new government work. Good luck with that!

Might it have been if they'd fielded more candidates?

Yes, they would have much more seats.

Not so sure. The Shinners having a role in any Dublin Government would probably harden Unionist sentiment not only in the North but also the rest of the UK. Any wavering voices in Belfast that had started to perhaps think that maybe a future in which an EU connected Dublin might not be such a bad option would now baulk at the idea given that a bunch of terrorist and criminal supporters now had at least a hand on the helm.

From a UK perspective, any ROI Government that has Sinn Fein on the inside must automatically be viewed as hostile and provoke an appropriate reaction.

That's what you get with PR. There will now be a period of horse trading and compromise which means the voters are unlikely to get the government they wanted.

This was voting against parties rather than for something.

Well, Sinn Fein performed pretty well in NI in the General Election. And NI voted to stay in the EU. There appears to be a growing desire for reunification on both sides of the border and, frankly, I doubt if the UK government has the stomach for another fight in Ireland on its hands.

Yes, we are a step closer.

I have no crystal ball but expect it would be hard to deliver on their promises. They will also have to rein in their more Republican element to maintain support of the middle ground. One of the TDs already made a speech including 'up the RA'.
If they prove to be better than what was there, they may grow. If I was making predictions, I would say that they will struggle to gain a consensus for some of their ideas.
If they build houses and cut hospital waiting lists, they will be heroes. If they spend millions making every sign be in Irish or constantly bang on about the North, people will quickly lose patience.
