This post has been merged from a topic called 'Nabib Benteleb (paper talk) ' by bexleydave We need a creative midfielder who is tough enough to get stuck in. Some of the reports since Camarassa left have suggested there were injury and fitness issues, plus there were rumours of him being late for training. It could possibly be that Roy wants a creative midfielder, but Victor was unable to prove himself match ready? Benteleb is undoubtedly a talented player if his attitude is right.

This is a possibility of course but the current 'Mould' of midfielders is working in the sense that it appears we will survive once again and this is the primary objective. We have players who are disciplined, organised and play to a rigid system and Hodgson might believe that bringing in a creative midfielder with different qualities etc etc could upset the apple cart.Just speculation.

He's not really a creative midfielder in my opinion. More like a defensive one, but with some creative skills. Strong and feisty though, definitely built for the PL.

In the main I am in agreement, my comments about a creative midfielder were in general terms and not specific to Bentaleb. Reports have suggested that Bentaleb has been "Frozen out" at Schalke on disciplinary grounds and I am not certain he has featured at all this season.Another player who was also "Frozen out" at Schalke was our very own Max Meyer.

He had a good goal return last season, so that looks like a positive. He's also played in the PL, so it won't be a shock to him. The downsides could be attitude and match fitness.

Ye I agree but if we play him in a number 8 role he'll be a lot more 'creative' than current options and still able to provide protection. I'd imagine Roy would also like his strength and combative side to compliment the flair. Still he'd take a little time to get up to full fitness... and we'd actually need to agree a transfer! But if it comes off I'll certainly be happy. Edited by samprior (15 Jan 2020 11.53am)

i assume we would only be looking at this if we sold james mccarthy? cant think we need any more central players, considering also thats jairos natural position and wheb everybody is fit we have more than enough.

McArthur is still performing to a good level but there are signs of decline, poor at Norwich and Southampton (great v Arsenal) and we could do with an upgrade, McCarthy looks crocked to me, Schlupp is unreliable and on a huge wage, Luka has been out of form for a while, Meyer is a misfit, Kouyate is good defensively but is not so good in the anchor position, Jairo is decent, so I don't agree we're OK in midfield - we need some pace in there and some flair - it's not the same priority as full back or striker, and when Wilf goes we'll need two wide men as replacements imo, but we still need to bring in a quality midfielder.
