I have spoken to the family who raised no objections to me naming the gentleman in question. I am sure many will have realised who he is. Alan Woan, rising 89 next year and still a combative character who regularly attends Turf Moor and freely offers his opinion on the matches he views. Thank you all for helping me start to answer the question. I wonder if the Palace have and "official" archivist who may be able to supply further information on this question

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Petchey and Choules would still put in a performance today. They played for peanuts and I was really proud of their style of play because it was entertaining. How can we be proud of football that bores you to death knowing that these guys are earning more in a year than the average guy/girl would earn in a lifetime!

Maybe Palace and Burnley could arrange something for the fixture at the end of the month, have him receive a round of applause in the centre circle or something..

Len Choules was an ever-present at centre half for years - till around 1960, I think. I have memories - both good and bad - of a particular home match against Carlisle in 1959. I belonged to a syndicate which bought some tickets at every home game for the draw for the match ball, and at half time when the winning number was announced, we found that we'd won. The bad news that day was that with Palace having been 0-1 down for most of the game, Len put the result beyond doubt with a fantastic own goal at the Whitehorse end, his back pass from about 30 yards clearing the goalkeeper's head (probably Vic Rouse) by about 5 yards. For years afterwards we played with that ball - always known as the Choules ball - in Brockwell Park.
