For its age its got to be "Jason and the Argonauts" from 1963. No CGI all stop motion. stunning for its time.

The effects in jaws 3 were worse than 1 and 2. That immense shark bashing into the glass tunnel. What? Didn’t bother with 4 on tv, Michael Caine selling out just a load more. I remember seeing jaws 3 in 3d at the ABC on Streatham highroad there was one good bit we're a person's eye popped out if I remember

Whilst Jaws is still a superb film, the effects even for then were bloody awful. Indeed. It was the acting and direction that made it great.

I love some of the 'old' films, in part because the special effects were so bad - but probably the best that could be done with the available technology and resources. Maybe I mean 'quaint' as opposed to 'bad'. Some examples: War of the Worlds (1950s) 2nd edit: Damned autocorrection! Edited by YT (23 Oct 2019 9.02am) Edited by YT (23 Oct 2019 9.03am) I was going to mention war of the worlds. Won the oscar for best sfx. Forbidden planet and the day the earth stood still also worthy mentions. Recently cgi so advanced they're all amazing and thus all forgettable

People get all sentimental about that movie and overlook the fact that the effects were seemingly created at the cost of a pint in the shed of a bloke called Alf.

Is that where the phrase - 'alf measures - came from?

If we are going by SFX for the time they were made. Bladerunner(1982). A movie that stands up very well even today in regard to effects. Star wars(obviously) they did that in 1978 !?!? Lord of the rings trilogy, especially RoTK (2001-2003). Groundsetting.
