Today Spanish is tolerated in Catalunya , but Catalan must have at least equal status. Catalan independence is a wonderful idea.

Its got nothing to do with wealth. The Norwegians are wealthier than us. Would you force them to drop their language and identity to speak English 24/7 ? or to pay their taxes to support a dole-head in a Welsh mining town ? or to stop singing their own national anthem ? dream on. The 'Nation-State' works better than its alternatives. When this is forgotten there is often trouble : the Kurds
Edited by PalazioVecchio (19 Oct 2019 12.42pm) What exactly do you mean by 'dole-head'? I am on the dole and live in a town that was decimated when the pits closed. I have also been in employment since the age of 17 (57 now) and during that time have been on the dole for around 18 months in total. Am I a dole-head?

With your background, I'm I interested to know how/why you became a Palace fan. Maybe that's for a different thread though.

I was born in Sydenham but my dad was Welsh, from a little place called Clydach Vale. He was a miner down here, moved to London after the war and became a docker. When I was a kid he told me not to support Millwall and Palace were on an easy bus route, number 75. I moved to Wales around 20 years ago after becoming homeless in London (I had relatives down here who offered to help) and have worked practically ever since. Edited by johnno42000 (21 Oct 2019 4.35pm) Thanks, mate. On reflection, I misconstrued your earlier post by assuming that you were living in Wales at the time of the mine closures. Even so, like many of us, you've had an interesting path to the doors of Selhurst. When I was a lad living in Erith and my dad started taking me to the occasional Charlton Athletic home game, he told me that Millwall supporters could be quite 'forthright', given that a large number of them were dockers. No offence meant to your old man, obviously!

Am I a dole-head? i would define a 'dole-head' as somebody happy to live on the dole and never seek work. The Catalans seem happy to support their own dole-heads but not the dole-heads living in the Castilian Speaking parts of Spain. a poshy in Sant Cugat Barcelona will feel aggrieved to support a dole-head in Nijar, Almeria. Not really the same Tribe. Catalan independence is about language, identity and economics.

apart from the Kurds, the Catalans are one of the most numerous populations of ethnically distinct types who do not have their own country. consider them like Scots who speak their own language and struggle to speak the language of the central government , want their independence and hate being ruled over. Stingy with money, too. Edited by PalazioVecchio (23 Oct 2019 12.13am)

Anyway they are a proud nation and for so many years under Franco Catalan lingo was banned and my ex's Mother although born in Sabadell she couldn't read or write it becaus only Spanish was taught in Schools and if caught speaking Catalan in public you were in trouble!
