However, have a look at the GDP of Croatia...or indeed most other countries and compare them to ours. The 'real' English are fine.....and its duds are still worthy of their birthright because essentially.....they are our duds. I'm not going to sell them out because someone with a foreign accent is higher achieving than them. Allegiance matters more......though I accept that there is a wider European allegiance also. Edited by Stirlingsays (29 Sep 2019 1.42pm) Not sure where this 'allegiance' stuff comes into it if I am honest. Whilst I make no bones about my Western Chauvinism, I also put as much emphasis on values as I do accidents of birth in terms of who I identify with. And I despair of the dumbing down of working-class culture in this country. Where you are more likely to find a television attached to a wall than a painting or book-cases that contain everything else other than actual books. And we, collectively, have to take some of the blame for that. The working class sold their collective political souls for a chance to play golf at the weekends and take off for two weeks a year in some soul-destroying all-inclusive luxury prison camp in a third-world s*** hole. However, I also concede that I can be a bit odd and yearn for the day in which the notion of teaching primary school children the basics of Hellenistic philosophy trumps any nonsense about cartoon penguins having two dads. With 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius the base for our entire educational syllabus!

I couldn't agree more and of course western chauvinism is just a recognition of reality.

Middle class will have McVities. Working class will have Aldi chocolate biscuits. The classical distinction.
