Full disclosure: I used to support a different club when I knew nothing about football. They were flashy, the Premiere League loved them, they always finished well, and I was told by football fans that once you choose your club you're not allowed to change ever under any condition under penalty of...I don't know, what? God Almighty striking me down, presumably. Welcome. I was introduced to supporting Palace by my Grandfather back in the late seventies. He originally supported Chelsea but had moved to Gypsy Hill in West Norwood and decided to start supporting Palace, eventually becoming a steward. Obviously most of us move locations at some points of our lives and I've occasionally thought how often does this also come with a football club change. Those that heavily value the 'match experience' of watching live football probably change clubs or 'adopt' a club more readily. For me, supporting a club is more about identifying with an area and as I still see myself as essentially a misplaced Londoner there's no way I could support a club up here. There's also something about the Crystal Palace name and that sash with that 'club of the eighties' idea....which has imprinted itself. They said, 'club of the eighties'.... but they didn't say which century. Edited by Stirlingsays (29 Aug 2019 11.44pm)

God Almighty striking me down, presumably. And yet... Over the past few years I've come to believe the club in question only cares about turning a profit, and not at all about winning any more cups in any tournaments. They've become stale and boring, no matter what changes are made to the club. It's not that I care that they're not willing League titles or other championships, it's that they have the patina of a dynasty, but I like roller coasters. I told my son that if Palace beats Man U and my former club loses that day, I would change allegiances and begin to follow Palace. And here I am. Hopefully I'm welcome, and my story doesn't trigger ire amongst those who believe "first choice is final choice" in life. Thanks for reading, and I hope to get to know everyone better. FFS, am I the only one on here who finds this sort of post Nauseating? So if we hadn't beat Man U on Saturday you wouldn't have chosen to support Palace. It begs belief. What happens if we lose to Villa on Saturday? do you start following someone else? Like Stirling says, to me your football club is a way of identifying with your area, its about family and friendships, its not something to choose based on the last weekends results. I wish the OP no ill but come on, you stopped supporting your old club because they became "stale and boring" jeez you should have watched the Colchester game! Which makes you wonder the different amounts of match going supporters are with each club in say 40 years or sooner as local fans die off, which clubs will occupy the Prem more permanently, like Leeds Utd, and how many more Bury FC’s disappear or get expelled from the league.

Not really. The row of seats behind me at Selhurst appear to have different nationalities every week. Sometimes Chinese, sometimes American but more often than not Scandinavian. All seem very nice although often they seem clueless as to what’s going on. Once we eventually drop out of the premiership we won’t see any of these guys again and it will be left to us ‘locals’ to watch us play the Bristol City’s.

Stirling meant that local kids support anyone winning on tv but Crystal Palace.
