We have to maintain the 4-5-1 (or 4-3-3) on Saturday. Two up top has worked in the past but this season we appear to have even less ability to make 3 passes in midfield. With 5 in midfield even with bad passing at least you see players able to still get involved in the game - as opposed to just having 2 up top with the game just passing them by. I'd go with just one change from last week (as they all more than earned their place) in order to be slightly more creative given we'll likely have a bit more possession. Could exchange Kouyate and MacArthur tbh. Guaita Meyer/ to replace Camarasa after 65

You make good points, only there are tweaks and things possible during matches that are never done. Swapping Zaha and Townsend, earlier subs, not just like for like and sometimes more defensive. You’re right that Roy has had to work with little money, but it’ll be frustrating again if it’s just accepted we don’t pick up a point or 3 in any of f our league games because plan A didn’t work that week and the next and next home game. That’s very different to when Roy came in and had it even worse if you count no striker (Benteke) at all being worse and Zaha and Townsend aiming to arrive in the box. There are many things to knock Roy for (with subs and playing players out of position the most culpable) but this isn’t it. Townsend is definitely a worse player on the left wing rather than right and at this point Wilf is an inferior winger on the right wing too. Swapping wings serves nothing. If the point of swapping wings is to pander to Benteke then that’s madness. Taking two players from good* to average to bring Benteke up from bad to average is a bad trade. * Admittedly Andros hasn’t actually looked good this season so far but it’s early and he’ll come good based on prior evidence.

It seemed that against Spurs that Villa were quite attacking and got the lead then they parked the bus and tried to see it out but Spurs with their attacking players were able to break them down so they may try that tactic with us knowing that we struggle in this area. Therefore it is vital that we get the first goal. I just hope Roy finally changes our game plan and lets us attack with freedom rather than this negative backwards and sideways tippy tappy stuff that never produces anything.

Yes you make a good point on Townsend, but Zaha isn’t that much inferior on the right than the left. So I’d have them swap at some points in the game because it asks different questions of full backs when we hav the usual stalemate. Obviously that’ll never happen (breaking a stalemate with anything intentional). The aim is to score goals and if the supply works then the equation isn’t so relevant. It’s a big ‘if’ though. Your logical post makes the Benteke extension even more ridiculous, which you probably agree with, unless we sign 2 direct crossing wingers and then a year or 2 later we need to feed a modern, smaller, faster footballer who can actually play football. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Can't really understand the negativity towards Hodgson. This is a team that at best can finish 12th. Roy, without spending any money, is doing a blinding job. I think we'll be fine. 4 points from 3 games ain't bad.

Palace struggling to score a single goal and playing without any real heart? You can expect that performance for most of the season. Not sure what your optimism is based on? I saw plenty of heart against Everton and United.

If he can do that then everything is fine.

If that stocking of piss Benteke took one of his chances last night then we would have won comfortably. Also Wickham is completely shot as a football player. Those injuries have finished his career at the highest level. We need to get behind Ayew big style now as he is literally all we have as a striker. Villa are all out attack in most games and that wont change at Selhurst. I am confident of a win. Their full backs are their weak link so lets play for a big game from Zaha.

Winning 1 in 3 home goals will only get you 6/7 home wins a season but luckily our away form saved us last season. Are there any Palace fans who actually enjoy watching the type of football we play at home? Doubt there are many.

God only knows how it will pan out. A decent result would at least let us move on from the dire Colchester result. Not as though I'm bothered we're out of the Carabao Cup, but the performance..
