I'd let smokers and druggies die first along with alcoholics, people who do very dangerous sports and health tourists.
Fat people are down the list and we need to define what constitutes 'fat' because it's not so easy.

How about we don't leave anyone to die? Where does it stop? What if that overweight person is someone on a £500k p/a salary who has contributed loads to the NHS via NI and Tax? Why should they be refused?

And smokers contribute far more than the cost of their treatment via the duty they pay on cigarettes. Same applies for alcoholics.

If you want to punish people, then put a tax on junk food and ringfence it to go the NHS. But to let people die is a ridiculous thing to say.

So we know that most cancers could be prevented by diet. If you get cancer and have eaten those foods, we should refuse you treatment because of that? Let's not be silly and say that people deserve to die. These are peoples husbands, wives, mums, dads, children etc. Be a bit more empathetic.

Yes it is but someone who breaks his leg playing weekend sport made a choice too. Fitness fans are likely to live longer and end up being a burden on the system anyway.

You are quite right of course. Although, some people really don't deserve treatment. Those who get a new liver and then continue drinking for example.

A few years ago I worked on a contract where TfL were the client.

As part of our contract we had to offer a scheme offer to train prisoners on their release. As part of the deal they got a flat paid for in easy reach of the place of work. Whilst this was a worthy scheme, I also had a number of graduates on my team who could barely afford to rent a room, they all had good engineering degrees from good universities and came from a variety of backgrounds. I found it drastically unfair that if you do everything right, you get nothing, however, if you are a scumbag, you get everything.

Similarly with the NHS, I used to live somewhere where it cost £40 to see a GP, the local authority gym membership was £40 a month. By having to contribute something to go and see a doctor, people are a lot more conscious of their health. Tax was also much lower.

I'm not saying that we should go the way of america, but I do think we should have a system that makes people a bit more responsible for themselves.

This is wrong and original article shows how the guy does not even understand the subject he is clearly doing it for the big headlines.

Because someone is overweight or obese does not make them unhealthy or unfit this is something the media and other bodies have been pushing.

Each case needs to be looked at not lumping every one together.

The cost to the NHS is not because of people being overweight it's about unhealthy lifestyles which has nothing to do with weight.

People going on about heart attacks etc again this is something you look at case by case just stating overweight you will have heart attack is false the scientific data does not back this up it's again diet/lifestyle.

NHS doesn't help matters when you look at their suggestions for food etc they are all wrong encouraging high carb diets then wonder why people are obese or have diseases like diabetes.

A friend went through lots of this with myself I thought he was chatting load of rubbish how could the likes of NHS be wrong but when you do look at the proper scientific data she was correct the health system is broken because it's all about $$$ rather then people being healthy.

Last thing don't need to go to gym they have become the new social norm if you correct lifestyle/diet you will be fine most people that do the gym still do not correct previously mentioned so it makes going to the gym pointless really

You may have a point. A friend of mine is a GP she tells me that the current NHS advice on diet is wrong and out of date. She reads the latest research and says it will take the NHS a couple of years to catch up.

Her advice is sugar is the killer, cut this out and have a low carb diet with high fat content e.g. full fat Greek yogurt.

I wouldn’t say it’s pointless. There is a social aspect to it and it’s, well not fun exactly, but quite enjoyable. Maybe a bit counter productive if you’re working full time and it’s just another stress creator in a busy life.

This is a good point. By any objective measure Eddie Hall was very overweight at his peak but was the strongest man in the world and so the best at his “sport”.

NHS doesn't want to change because it's guidelines come from policy makers who have an investment in things like food industry.

just look at that government report about saturated fat that just came out and what a load of rubbish that was even in the research they state the data comes from shows saturated fat does not cause the likes of heart disease yet they have ignored this and sticking with people should eat low fat diets.

the nhs still keeps advising people that are diabetics to eat fruit and wholegrains whats that about any person hat knows how nutrition works correctly knows both are no no yet doctors state this works no it doesn't but remember it's the calories or body weight that matters not fixing the insulin resistance.

The NHS was formed to make people better.
It now is used to keep people alive as well.
If it doesnt treat the smokers the fatties the druggies, the drunks(main cost of A And E),the old gits and idiots who drive like dicks etc.
Someone will do a time and motion study and it will shrink.
If you dont get customers you close your shop.
Keep as is and stop expecting people and forcing them to live till they're 146.
If I want to die by 60 it's my business and no one elses.
Including my mob.
This is only a brief visit and no one gets out alive.
I'm insured so screw the system it wont be needed.
