I don’t understand the issue with FOB - don’t bookies exist so people can gamble what they want?

A responsible bartender would not allow a drinker to down a short every minute whilst standing at the bar. At some point he would say that's enough.

I watch people play these machines all the time it is highly addictive the machine is designed that way.

In general I think people should be allowed to do what they like but you have to have some rules. It is no coincidence that the bookies have more betting shops in poorer areas than in wealthy one.

Amongst my middle class friends none of them gamble I suspect that is because they are happy with their lifestyle where as poorer people are always hoping for that one life changing moment.

Although by smoking I do contribute some of the roughly 14 billion pounds towards the states coffers of which only about 50% is spent on any diseases caused.
No brainer to carry on really.
Happy pouting.

You are currently at liberty to condemn yourself to a shortened existence, brown teeth, yellow ceilings, high costs, tasteless food and potentially breathless, choking death if you choose to accept your addiction.

Happy coughing.

To support that suspicion; when I was a poor student, I gambled nearly every day, and now I’m employed and comfortable, I don’t even look at it.

Yes, I take your point but I would’ve thought online gambling was more of a risk. I’m glad I don’t have a gamblers mindset. I always think how much I can afford to lose rather than how much I stand to win.

William Hill is the first of many to announce closures, the fixed odds betting crackdown is just the excuse they are looking for.

Bookies in this country over expanded their high street operations especially in poorer areas. This happened before online gambling took off and the high street started closing down.

The market growth is now online and across all demographics. As a punter who uses bookies the demographics there is older men who are dying off and not being replaced.

This would have happened anyway but for the record I think the crackdown is a good idea those machines are addictive and destroy lives. I would go one step further and ban TV ads before the watershed and ban all bookies that are not registered in the UK and pay tax here.

This may make me a hypocrite but I can live with that. I have a friend who is an addict and has been in gaol several times to pay for his habit. Bookies are a leech on society and I never feel sorry for them.

What about the employees who are losing their jobs.
No pity for those individuals?

Did you sympathise with the executioner when hanging was ended?

No

They must observe first hand the misery they create but choose to ignore it.

In any case isn't this all moving online?

Potentially a shortened existence.
Evidence is that there is more chance but not guaranteed.
Many healthy people suffer at death.
Look left instead of right when crossing the road has a similar ending.

Bit harsh. That’s like blaming coal miners for destroying the atmosphere.

There is a world of difference between being the victim of an accident and choosing/being addicted to self inflicted harm.

Death is inevitable and the nature of our deaths is usually unknown, but that does not mean that I will play Russian roulette for kicks.

Employment levels are at a record high.
Those workers will find new jobs.
The customers will find new, more worthwhile places to spend their money.
